4 Partner Questions: Defining Fear Define “Fear” in this story. Who is fearful? Of What? Why? What is symbolic in this story? What is ironic? How might this situation also be a metaphor for South Africa’s system of Apartheid? What might Gordimer’s message to her reader’s be?

5 Pass Book Assignment Select two quotes (one for each panel) that embody rich, sensory detail. Quotes should reveal insight into the deeper meaning behind the story (fear, fear becoming reality, symbolism, etc). Vividly recreate the quote (Gordimer’s language should paint a picture). Use color!!!
