2. Facts O Nelson Rolihlaha Mandela was born in South Africa on the 18 th of July 1918. O He lived in a small village of thatched huts. O He spent his time minding cattle and sheep or helping out with making dinner.

3. More Facts!! O Rohillala means troublemaker O His dad died when he was nine. O He went to school when he was seven. O His grandfather was leader of the Theubeu tribe O He went to university and got a degree.

4. Even more facts!!!!!!!!!! the struggle is my life”. O His motto was the struggle is my life”. O He has a movie out called “Long Walk to Freedom”. O Mandela died of prolonged illness. O He rejected offers of freedom while in jail. O He got married 3 times and had 6 children.

5. Prison O In 1964 Mandela was sentenced to life in prison. O He became known as prisoner No. 46664. O The prison was on Robben island. O Nelson Mandela was 10,000 days in prison before his release in 1990.

6. Protests O Mandela and his friend Tambo helped poorer black South Africans to improve their treatment and conditions. O In 1944 he joined the ANC. O Mandela hosted protests on streets together with millions of black and white South Africans. O They protested peacefully against the unjust policy of apartheid.

7. Achievements O Mandela shared the Nobel peace award in 1999 with F.W.de Clerc. O He got the blacks to vote, to be given a proper education and to be given proper wages. O He became South Africa's first black president. O There is a 9 foot bronze statue of him in Pretoria. O He qualified as a lawyer.

8. Funeral O Nelson Mandela died on the 5 th of December. O He died surrounded by his family. O His body lay in state in Pretoria for two days. O Leaders from all around the world came to pay their respects on another day. O Nelson Mandela was buried among his own tribes people and it was a very private ceremony.
