17 Making Progress Toward Global Impact Increasing Capacity, Improving Efficiency, Reducing Costs, Expanding Investment Renewable energy accounts for 23% of all electricity generation worldwide (4,892 TWh). Renewable electricity accounted for 56% of all new electrical capacity installations in the U.S. U.S. clean energy investment reached more than $27B annually in 2012 Wind power accounted for about 75% of newly installed U.S. renewable electricity capacity in 2012 Solar PV capacity in the U.S. grew more than 83% from 2011 to 2012 Cumulative global renewable electricity installed capacity has grown by 97% from 2000 to 2012 (from 748 GW to 1,470 GW) Source: 2012 Renewable Energy Data Book, U.S. Department of Energy Worldwide Renewable Electricity Capacity
18
18 Multi-Exciton Generation – potentially improving photovoltaic solar efficiency by 30% Advanced Biofuels – Turning plants into fuels compatible with existing infrastructure NREL Innovation for the Future Integrating/Upgrading Energy Systems Achieving Scientific Breakthroughs Reduce the cost of solar energy systems to 6 cents per kWh by 2020. Cost competitive without subsidies to enable large-scale adoption across the US Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) Integrating renewable energy at all scales Advancing DOE’s SunShot Solar Initiative
