Smart Grids - challenges and mission
Smart grids‘ mission is to create a shared vision which enables Europe’s electricity grids to meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century, fulfils the expectations of the society and strengthens the European business context for the electricity sector and its international opportunities Environmental protection Liberalised Market Interconnections and gross border trade Sustainability through renewable generation – 22% in 2010 Customer market participation Energy efficiency – 18 % CHP in 2010

5
The key element of the vision
Create a Toolbox of proven technical solutions enabling existing grids to accept power injections from all kinds of generation plants How much energy will be transmitted from North Africa?
6
Grid enhancement to transmit offshore wind power through Germany
2015 – 10 GW GW Strong resistance of the public against the erection of new overhead lines Vattenfall Europe Transmission 850 km 400 kV AC until 2015 versus HVDC long distance? Transfer of 4000 MW per link Homogeneous balance of load flow in the AC grid Improvement of stability
