12 PREVENTING BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION  Speak clearly  Don’t speak too quickly  Make sure that you are in a suitable environment e.g. quiet, not too busy  Listen carefully, using physical gestures and your eyes to express your interest

13 PREVENTING BARRIERS TO COMMUNICATION  Make sure that you understand each other, by responding to what is being said, and repeating the message if necessary.  Use pictures to reinforce the verbal message  Use technological aids e.g. computer programs

14 BARRIERS ‘Tregwilym’, an Old People’s Home, is in the middle of a multi-cultural town. The clients have various difficulties, e.g. aural, visual and memory loss.

15 BARRIERS The health practitioners who visit the Home tend to use vocabulary which is full of medical ‘jargon’ when speaking to clients, and this creates difficult situations. a) Discuss the barriers to communication which are likely to exist in the Home. b) Discuss how these could be overcome.
