2 Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives (v.1) Connects to previous examples 1. 2:13, citizens to government 2. 2:18-25, slaves to masters 3. 3:1, wives to husbands

3 Two extremes 1. Ancient world: low status of women Jewish law: unthinkable for woman to change religion w/o husband. [v.6] Greeks: woman’s duty: “remain indoors and be obedient to her husband” Romans: woman had no rights; she remained forever a child

5 1 Pt.3:7 – a husband’s reality check A failure to obey takes his prayers away “It includes honoring (rather than running down) a person verbally, but also indicates deeds that show that the person is honored, a proper respect and deference to the person”

8 1. Her audience: disobedient husband  1 Co.7 2. Her conduct: 1:15, 18; 2:12; 3:16 3. Her example: She models the gospel 4. Her purpose: gain (convert) 1 Co.9 If this example can bless a mixed marriage, what of two Christians?

9 This kind of life requires... 1. Knowledge of gospel. Jn.17:17 2. Obedience to gospel. 3. Consistency of faith and life  Inconsistency is a weapon 4. Purity of life (2) We owe scripture the same reverence we owe God

14 Inner emphasis (hidden person, 4) Inner beauty (1 Sm.16:7) Incorruptible qualities  Gentleness: not self-assertive; no loud, irate speech and action  Quiet spirit: calm tranquility Society sees and values outer beauty God sees and values inner beauty

15 Incorruptible qualities applied: Gentleness (meekness)  Not a slave to fashion. Is.3:16-24  Not a slave to popularity Quiet spirit  Not enslaved to exhibitionism... drawing attention to self by… raising hems lowering tops form-fitting clothes

16 Her value (4) (Very) expensive, costly Gold cannot compare  Mk.14:3; 1 T.2:9 4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.
