New Chapter(s) Fold a triangle divider Label it: Chapters 15, 16, & 17 - WEATHER
4
I. The Atmosphere A.Why is it important? 1.Without it, life would not be able to exist 2.Contains Oxygen 3.Keeps water in liquid state B.What is it made of? 1.Mostly Nitrogen (78%) 2.Oxygen (21%) 3.Other Gases (like CO2, Methane, & Water Vapor ) (1%)
5
I. The Atmosphere C.What does it look like? 1.Air has a.Mass b.Pressure c.Density 2.Layered 3.Transparent
6
I. The Atmosphere D.Air Pressure 1.The result of the weight of a column of air pushing down on an area 2.Changes with altitude 3.Measured with Barometers
7
I. The Atmosphere E.Layers 1.Troposphere a.Where weather occurs 2.Stratosphere a.Contains the ozone layer 3.Mesosphere a.Protects Earth’s surface from meteoroids 4.Thermosphere a.Contains thinnest, hottest, highest air
9
Remember: Temp. varies with altitude Pressure decreases with altitude Density decreases with altitude
10
II. Energy in the Atmosphere and Heat Transfer A.Energy from the Sun 1.Energy is transferred to Earth via radiation 2.Electromagnetic waves
11
II. Energy in the Atmosphere and Heat Transfer B.Energy in the Atmos. 1.Some is Absorbed a.Water Vapor and CO 2 – absorb infrared rad. b.Ozone Layer – absorbs UV c.Clouds, dust and other gases 2.Some is Reflected a.Clouds, dust and other gases, b.Clouds = Mirrors (White reflects Light)
12
…Because of Scattering, which is reflection of light in all directions! Light you see in the sky has been scattered by gas molecules Gas molecules scatter short wavelengths of visible light more than long wavelengths!
13
Remember Heat Transfer??? Radiation Conduction Convection When we talked about the Earth’s layers, we talked about the forms of heat transfer… Can you describe the characteristics of each? Transfer of energy through an empty space Heat transfer through direct contact Heat transfer by the movement of a heated fluid
15
II. Energy in the Atmosphere and Heat Transfer C.Heat Transfer in the Troposphere 1.Occurs via Conduction, Convection and Radiation First few meters of the Trop. is heated by conduction Most heating caused by convection Convection currents move heat throughout the troposphere
