1 Bell Work: Page 7 of Scientific Notebook
What are the 3 states of matter? Describe each of the 3 states of matter.

2 CHEMISTRY…IT’S ALL AROUND US
What is Chemistry?

3 Spi’s and CLE’s: CLE 3221.Inq.3 Use appropriate tools and technology to collect precise and accurate data. CLE 3221.Inq.1 Recognize that science is a progressive endeavor that reevaluates and extends what is already accepted. CLE Investigate the characteristic properties of matter. CLE Explore the interactions between matter and energy.

4 Objectives: The learner will understand the role of chemistry in their lives. TLW investigate the characteristics of matter. TLW explore the interactions of matter & energy.

5 Key Topics States of Matter Changes of Matter
Evidence of a Chemical Change Chemical Reaction/Chemical Equation

6 What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of chemicals their properties, and the reactions in which they are involved.

7 What is a Chemical? Chemical- any substance that has a definite composition (everything).

8 What is a Chemical Reaction?
Chemical reaction- the process by which one or more substances change to different substances.

9 What are the 3 States of Matter?
Solid Liquid Gas

10 States of Matter Solid Fixed volume Fixed shape Liquid No fixed shape
Gas No fixed volume Put this chart at the top of page 6 in your scientific notebook.

11 What are Changes of Matter?
Two Categories: Physical - Changes in which the substance stays the same. Chemical – substance changes into something different

12 What type of change is it……..?
Cutting paper Wood burning Rust Ice cream melting Water boiling Milk souring

13 Answers: Cutting paper-physical Wood burning-chemical Rust-chemical
Ice cream melting-physical Water boiling-physical Milk souring-chemical

14 What are some evidences of Chemical Changes?
Evidence that a chemical change may be happening usually involves: 1) evolution of a gas. 2) formation of a precipitate. 3) an energy change. 4) a color change.

15 Evidence of a Chemical Change
Gas Evolution Bubbles form or odor Change in Energy Change in temp. or light given off Formation of a Precipitate Cloudy appearance; precipitate forms Color change Color looks different Place the chart at the bottom of page 6 of Scientific Notebook.

16 Closure: Please Be Able to tell me the difference between physical and chemical changes when you leave the room.

17 Homework: Name at least 3 branches of chemistry(example- biochemistry). Why is the ozone layer above the earth important? What is causing the ozone layer to get smaller?

18 Chemistry……It’s All Around Us!!!!!!!
Please keep your Scientific Notebook in order. Review All Work Daily
