2 Chapter 8 – Finished Water Storage Tanks shall be designed to facilitate turnover in 3- 5 days Tank Inspections * Monthly ground level inspection * Annual roof top inspection * Comprehensive interior/exterior inspection every 3-5 years 2

5 Chapter 8 (cont.) Access manhole required that is at least 4 inches above the roof Ground level structures shall have access manhole at least 24 inches above the roof or finished grade level 5

9 Chapter 8 (cont.) Acceptable construction materials and standards are identified Safety and tank access shall be provided using ladders, guards, cages, and railings that meet OSHA standards 9

11 Chapter 8 (cont.) Anchor bolt devices shall be provided for rooftop inspections Riser pipes, overflows, and vents shall be designed to be prevent freezing Painting systems shall conform to AWWA specifications and NSF 61 Cathodic protection is recommended 11

13 Chapter 8 (cont.) Tanks shall be properly disinfected and the chlorinated water must be disposed of properly Antennae on tanks shall conform to DWP Policy 98-01 and not interfere with access by the water department 13

14 Chapter 9 – Distribution System Piping Temporary Piping * Shall meet NSF 61 and AWWA stds. * Shall be disinfected An annual unidirectional flushing program is recommended to maintain water quality 14

15 Chapter 9 (cont.) System Design * Pipe coatings and linings shall meet standards * System components shall meet NSF 61 (Annex G) * Dead ends shall be minimized by looping 15

16 Chapter 9 (cont.) System Design * Selection of pipe materials should consider if the area is subject to permeation by organic solvents * Systems without fire protection shall use 3-inch minimum pipe diameter 16

17 Chapter 9 (cont.) System Design * Areas with poor water quality should be flushed twice each year Hydrants & Air Relief Values * Hydrant antifreeze now specified * Use of manual air release valves is recommended 17

18 Chapter 9 (cont.) Water and sewer pipe crossings shall use sewer pipe rated for 150 psi within 10 feet of the water main All service connections should be metered individually Distribution system repairs shall be performed in accordance with AWWA standards 18
