National Benefits (1) Rebalanced national economic geography of Britain, supporting sustainable long-term growth and reduced regional disparities Link the major cities of the Midlands and the North to the capital and each other- thousands of businesses closer to huge and internationally- competitive markets of London and the South East Bring major regional conurbations closer together, boosting productivity and enabling greater economic specialisation and regeneration London – West Midlands line alone could support the creation of around 40,000 jobs. Consultation ends 29th July 2011

National Benefits (2) Proposed ‘Y’ network will transform travel opportunities between the major population centres whilst releasing capacity on the classic rail network to improve connections to other destinations Alternative inter-urban travel by either air or by road will result in unacceptable environmental impacts and an increase in carbon emissions.

Possible East Midlands Service Patterns 2 tph to London (and Old Oak Common for Heathrow)- journey time less than an hour 3 tph Birmingham (Curzon St)- less than 30 minutes 5 tph South Yorks (Sheffield 20 minutes) 4 of which go onto Leeds- halving the existing journey times 1 tph to Newcastle- halving the existing journey time (2 hours) Plus- benefits from released capacity on Midland Mainline and other Classic rail lines Consultation ends 29th July 2011

City Council’s Position Subject to Connectivity into Nottingham City centre, strongly supportive- Long term development, regeneration and investment boost for the City massive journey time benefits to London and other Core Cities in Midlands and the North: Chance to retrieve poor national rail positioning post- Beecham Eastern Leg needs to be built as soon as possible- earlier, or at least no later than the western leg- benefits of eastern leg significantly higher than western leg But- must not ‘blight’ urgently needed investment in Midland Mainline- ‘Nottm in 90 Minutes’ and Electrification 20 Point ‘Yes to High Speed Rail for Nottingham’ Summary and City Council consultation response will be available shortly for people to use in their own responses Consultation ends 29th July 2011
