1 SWBAT solve problems by interpreting the remainder
Problem Solving SWBAT solve problems by interpreting the remainder

2 In your group, discuss how you would go about solving this problem.
To celebrate Cherry Hill’s 200th anniversary, 2000 people are invited to a formal dinner. If 12 people are seated at each table, how many tables will be needed?

3 1. Read Visualize yourself in the problem as you re-read it. Facts
2000 people invited Tables seat 12 Question How many tables are needed?

4 2. Plan Since each table seats 12 people, divide 2000 by 12 to find how many tables are needed. 2000 ÷ 12

5 3. Solve Compute the problem _ R 8 12) 2000 - 12 80 - 72 8

6 3. Solve – interpret the remainder
If the answer is 166, with a remainder of 8, how many tables does that mean are needed? 167 Another table is needed to seat the extra 8

7 4. Check Use the inverse operation to check.
Multiply 166 tables by 12 people at each table Add the remainder of 8 to the answer x +1660 1992

8 In your groups, Solve and interpret the remainder
A radio station is planning as 12.5 km walk for a fundraiser. The goal is to raise $98,003. If the pledge is $1.50 per km, how many people will need to walk 12.5 km to reach or surpass the goal? $1.50 x 12.5 = a 98,003 ÷ a 5227 people to surpass the goal

9 Examples Each touring van will accommodate 22 people. If one group has 170 people, how many touring vans will the group need? 8 vans needed 225 dignitaries are invited to a parade. There are 3 review stands that each seat 70 people. How many extra chairs will be needed to seat all the dignitaries? 15 extra chairs are needed

10 Examples There are 17 floats in the parade. Each float is decorated with 1026 carnations. If 500 carnations cost $189.50, how much will it cost to decorate all 17 floats. $6, to decorate 17 floats Festival organizers plan to have 170 fireworks set off at night. The show will last half an hour. If the same number of firecrackers are to go off each minute, how many should that be 5 a minute with 20 extra firecrackers
