INTRO TO LOG FUNCTIONS

Sect 5.10 on p. 451

The assumption

Inverse Functions

One – To – One Functions  Two functions are one to one if…  The original function and it’s inverse are both functions (would both pass the vertical line test)  We can test this on just the original function by doing the vertical test (makes sure the original relation is a function) and horizontal line test (would tell if the inverse would also be a function)  REMEMBER… A function means that every input (x value) has only one output (y value)

Is the following one to one?

Let’s compare tables (p.452 – 453) xF (x) ½ 01 12 24 38 416 xF (x) ½ 10 21 42 83 164 F(x) = 2 x L 2 (x) – Inverse Function

Graphically

Back to the graphs, box on p453 xF (x) ½ 01 12 24 38 416 xF (x) ½ 10 21 42 83 164 F(x) = 2 x L 2 (x) – Inverse Function
