Weird Disney Fact of the Day!

Imperialism  Imperialism - The domination of one country by another.  Imperialism can be political, military, social, or economic.

Economic Imperialism  By the late 1800’s, Europeans “owned” most of the world.  Their influence had spread everywhere.  This was all caused by the constant pursuit of…  Money $$$  They attacked and took over other countries for resources that could be sold.  (palm oil, rubber, oil, diamonds, gold, etc.)

Political and Military Imperialism  Imperialist Europeans took over countries and put up military outposts to protect their interests.

Social Imperialism  Many European countries wanted to spread the Christian Religions.  Social Darwinism – Idea that the strongest societies survive and should spread their influence.  Europeans believed that they were the dominant race and should show it.

Rise of Western (European) Civilization  Many eastern countries lacked military technology  (African nations, India, China, etc.)  Military technology made it easy for Europe to “spread their influence.”  New things like factories, machines, and….the machine gun were produced in the industrial revolution.  This lead to Indirect Rule – Europeans left local rulers in charge, but used them as colonies to make money, etc.

Imperialism in Africa  Africa was one of the first area to fall subject to imperialism  Europeans wanted to begin to explore “uncharted” areas in Africa…The Interior.  Most of these people were missionaries – attempting to spread Christianity.  They did some good things…like build schools, churches, and hospitals.

However…  They took a Paternalistic view of Africans, seeing them as “children” who needed guidance…  They thought that the African way of life was lesser.

Scramble for Colonies in Africa  By the early 1900’s, France, Britain, and Germany had colonies in Africa.  Berlin Conference – A meeting in Berlin, Germany to decide how to split up territory in Africa.  Guess how many African representatives were invited?  What do you think …Count? What do you think …Count?  By 1904, almost the entire continent of Africa was “Owned” by Europeans.

Negatives of Imperialism  Many African nations refused. They were all killed.  Natives were forced to work for almost nothing.  Land was taken from tribes that had lived there for over 1,000 years.  African religions and social structures fall apart.

Europeans in Muslim Territory  European countries would threaten military action to control Muslim areas.  It was easier for Europeans to take over here because many revolts were currently happening in many Muslim countries.

Backlash Against Christianity  Ottoman Empire – The last large Muslim Empire. Committed genocide against Armenian Christians in the early 1900’s.  Genocide – An attempt to completely “wipe out” a religious, political, or racial group.
