2. WHY WE DON’T BELIEVE IN THE “GAP” THEORY Answering One of Our Callers Questions From Last Show 2/20/07 “Does the Geological Column Demand a Gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2?”

3. 3 “Gap Theory” - This contends that there could be a multi-billion years long gap between Genesis 1:1 and verses 1:2 & 1:3 “Gap Theory” - This contends that there could be a multi-billion years long gap between Genesis 1:1 and verses 1:2 & 1:3. Most versions of the "gap" theory place millions of years of geologic time (including billions of fossil animals) in between these two first verses of Genesis. This is the "ruin- reconstruction" version of the gap theory. Gen. 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.“ (...insert lots of time “millions” – “billions” right around HERE...) Gen. 1:2 "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the waters.“ Gen. 1:3-5 "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. (v.4) And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. (v.5) And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.“ In this way, it is argued that perhaps "time" began to be counted on a certain day long after the universe had been put into motion, i.e. prior to verse 3 - and the "first day." Note here that all of this was "3 days" prior to the existence of stars; they were (as it is recorded) not created until "Day 4" (verses 14-19) of Creation Week.

4. 4 “Gap Theory” – ORIGINATES WITH HUMAN LOGIC AND THINKING! Where did the "gap theory" come from? There have been many attempts over the years to harmonize the Genesis account of creation with accepted geology (and its teaching of billions of years for the age of the earth), such as "theistic evolution" and "progressive creation."theistic evolutionprogressive creation The gap theory was another significant attempt by Christian theologians to reconcile the time scale of world history found in Genesis with the popular belief that geologists provide "undeniable" evidence that the world is exceedingly old (billions of years).billions of years Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847), a notable Scottish theologian and first moderator of the Free Church of Scotland, was perhaps the man most responsible for the gap theory. The idea can be traced back to the rather obscure writings of the Dutchman Episcopius (1583-1643), and was first recorded from one of Chalmers' lectures in 1814. Rev. William Buckland, a geologist, did much to popularize the idea. Although Chalmers' writings give very little information about the gap theory, many of the details are obtained from other writers such as the 19th century geologist Hugh Miller, who quoted from Chalmers' lectures on the subject.

And again; since we have no inspired account of geological formations, we are at liberty to believe that they were developed just in the order which we find them. The whole process took place in pre-Adamite times, in connection, perhaps, with another race of beings, and, consequently, does not at present concern us.” - Pember's - Earth's Earliest Ages - (page 28). “In the far distant dateless past, God created a perfect heaven and perfect earth. Satan was ruler of the earth which was peopled by a race of "men" without any souls. Eventually, Satan, who dwelled in a garden of Eden composed of minerals (Ezekiel 28), rebelled by desiring to become like God (Isaiah 14). Because of Satan's fall, sin entered the universe and brought on the earth God's judgment in the form of a flood (indicated by the water of 1:2), and then a global ice age when the light and heat from the sun were somehow removed. All the plant, animal, and human fossils upon the earth today date from this "Lucifer's flood" and do not bear any genetic relationship with the plants, animals, and fossils living upon the earth today.” - Fields, Unformed and Unfilled, p. 7.Ezekiel 28Isaiah 14

7. 7 “Gap Theory” – ORIGINATES WITH HUMAN LOGIC AND THINKING! “On the opening page we stated that 2 Peter 3:5-7 is NOT a reference to Noah's flood. There are only two (2) places in the entire Bible where the Earth is flooded by water. One, of course, is at the time of Noah's flood (Genesis 7). The other is at Genesis 1:2 where it speaks about the condition of the Earth at the time just before God said, "Let there be light." Now, if 2 Peter 3:5-7 is not a cross-reference to Noah's flood, then it MUST be a cross-reference to Genesis 1:2 (there is no other alternative - simple logic).” “Keep in mind that from the days of the Apostles up through the Dark Ages, and until just a few centuries ago, a 6,000 year age for the heavens and Earth was accepted dogma in the institutions of both the Church and Academia. Up until then, the real age of the Earth was not a burning issue. 8. 8 “Gap Theory” – A Theory With Many Variants There are many variants within the "Gap Theory" and these have remained popular among “God-fearing” people for over 140 years. (Darwin's "Origin of Species" was first published in 1859, about 148 years ago). Allowing lots of time being theologically inserted into the very beginning of the Bible allows those believers to get back to what are considered "matters of faith" while the scientists go ahead with their detailed calculations and theories.

9. 9 “Gap Theory” – What Needs To Be Rejected & Accepted By Christians! If "the scientists must be right" then Scriptures should be bent to conform to current scientific beliefs, whether they are testable-repeatable in nature or rather based solely upon recent consensus. Noah's Flood must have been merely regional and the Earth must be very, very old to have slowly accumulated its deep sedimentary layers. And the fact is, every single dating method (outside of Scripture) is based on fallible assumptions. There are literally hundreds of dating tools. However, whatever dating method one uses, assumptions must be made about the past. Not one dating method man devises is absolute! Even though 90% of all dating methods give dates far younger than evolutionists require, none of these can be used in an absolute sense either.

11. 11 PROBLEMS In ACCEPTING THE “Gap Theory” The gap theorist ignores the evidence for a young earth.evidence for a young earth The true gap theorist also ignores evidence consistent with an age for the earth of less than 10,000 years. There is much evidence for this -- the decay and rapid reversals of the earth's magnetic field; the quantity of helium in the earth's atmosphere; the amount of salt in the oceans; the wind-up of spiral galaxies; and much more. Most importantly, the gap theory undermines the gospel at its foundations. By accepting an ancient age for the earth (based on the standard uniformitarian interpretation of the geologic column), gap theorists leave the evolutionary system intact.
