Statistics in Psychology
3
Descriptive Statistics Summarize quantitative information about some group. Frequency Distribution-shows how often a particular observation occurs
4
Descriptive Statistics Examples Histograms-similar to bar graphs shows frequency distribution by rectangles
5
Line graph Frequency Polygon- or line graph
6
Mean, Mode and Median Mean-average of all scores Mode-Appears most frequently Median-central score
7
The Bell Curve Z scores-distance of a score from the mean in units of standard deviation Normal Curve-theoretical bell shaped curve
8
Skewed Data Unless a distribution is symmetrical, it is skewed. Positive skew-a distribution with an extreme score High Negative skew- a distribution with a low score
9
Measures of Variability Depict the diversity of the distribution Range-distance between the highest and lowest score Variance/Standard Deviation-average distance of any score from the mean.
