MAP Metal Products and Fabrication
2
Metal and Welding One must know the type of metal before welding –If some metals are mixed they can produce a bad reaction –If some metals are mixed properly they can form a strong joint
3
Weldability Definition –The ease with which a metal can be welded properly Good Weldability: Almost any process can be used to produce acceptable welds and little effort is needed to control the procedures Poor Weldability: The processes used are limited and that the preparation of the joint and the procedure used for fabrication must be controlled carefully.
4
Before Welding Before welding can occur one must identify the type of metal Once the metal has been identified the type of electrode or filler metal must be selected –Electrodes and filler rods are comprised of different types of metals.
5
Filler Metal Examples MIG Welding Wire Gas Welding Rod Stick Welding Electrodes
6
Ferrous Metal Ferrous Metal: Describes any metal that is derived from iron. Iron Ore: What is mined to create workable ferrous metal. Steel: Iron that contain carbon in different amounts. –Iron and carbon in steel are packed closer together. Therefore steel is more dense.
7
Ferrous Metal Examples Galvanized Steel Power Line Pole Steel Wool Railway Rail Steel Products Example
8
Non-Ferrous Metals Non-Ferrous Metal: Any metal that is not derived from iron. Examples: –Aluminum –Copper –Brass –Silver –Gold
9
NCWHS Lab Metals The NCWHS Lab will utilize the following metals –Aluminum: For turning and milling apps. –Brass: For turning and milling apps. –Steel: For welding and fabrication apps.
10
NCWHS Metal Examples Aluminum Round Stock Steel Plate Brass Round Stock Steel Tubing Threaded Round Stock
11
Metal Apps Aluminum Used for turning because it is light in weight and density Material can be easily machined enhances the life and quality of the cutting tools
12
Metal Apps (II) Brass Used for turning and machining because its softer than steel Has a bright gold type appearance Because it’s a soft material the cutting tool life is enhanced
13
Metal Apps (III) Steel Used predominately for welding and fabricating ops in the NCWHS lab High in strength and is a ferrous metal Heavier than aluminum and brass. Machined harder than aluminum and brass The least expensive of most industrial metals Classified by the carbon content
14
I Iron oreIron ore pellets for the production of steel
15
Bauxite or aluminum ore, the source of aluminum.
