4. Why NJIT? u Excellent Chemical Engineering school with good facilities and faculty u Close to home (no dorms yet) u Wanted to keep my Fuller Brush business u My brother went here u My dad wouldn’t pay more than NJIT

5. What did I like at NJIT? u The computer part of every Chem Eng class u The laboratory facilities u The Chem Eng, Chemistry, and Math Professors u My classmates and social activities u The Co-op program (the most important decision of my career)

6. What did I find out on Co-op part I? u Isobutylene polymerizes in high heat sulfuric acid (very interesting) u Naptha gas accumulates near the ground (interesting & important) u What bosses say and want are different u Job performance reviews are like humanities classes

7. What did I find out on Co-op part II? u Refineries and Chemical Plants use ridiculous amounts of steam u Computers control many refinery operations u Programming my material balances was fun (Super important) u Other people found it fun for me to program their material balances. u I found out about Technical Computing

8. What was my first full time job? u Introduced to database systems u Worked long hours u Learned many computer languages and systems u Learned about billing rates u Given choice one night of moving to Baton Rouge, Saudia Arabia, or get laid off. Went to BR. Almost died. Twice.

9. Full time job part II u Moved from BR Back to NJ to Process Simulation u Found value in networking after hours through softball u Moved to research environment to help scientists u Worked on Masters in Comp Science u Started business after Masters Degree u Working on PhD. in Info. Systems

10. Why did I start a business? u Wanted to use Technical and Sales background u Liked the variety of technical challenges u Understood concept of customer u Did not understand concept of boss u Could always go through a contract house (headhunter)

11. How did my business grow? u Used all of my contacts from grammar school to the present. u Willing to take short assignments u First major break came through a softball contact u Second big break came from studying Swedish

12. What didn’t I know from my college education? u You sell yourself first u Learn other aspects of business such as Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Sales, and Legal. u Presentation and interview skills are a key to success u A Roladex is more important than a bank account

What advice can I leave you with? u Learn as many new things as you can, even if they are not the most fun u Build a good reputation with teachers, peers, and bosses u Network through your professional societies and social clubs u “When you are with work people, you are at work” u Have the courage to change
