 It is the perspective from which an author presents their story.  There are 3 types of POV

 This the person who tells the story. We either know them to be a character in the story or they are just a voice telling the story.

 The story is told by one of the characters of the story.  The character uses pronouns like I, me, and we  The character often participates in most of the action  We the readers are limited to knowing only what the character knows, thinks, and feels.

 “ When I wake up, the other side of the bed is cold. My fingers stretch out, seeking Prim’s warmth but finding only the rough canvas cover of the mattress. She must have had bad dreams and climbed in with our mother. Of course, she did. This is the day of the reaping.”

 Third person pronouns such as he, his, she, it, its, they, and them are used in telling the story.  The narrator is all-knowing, and can see into the minds of all of the characters.  The narrator can also report what is said and done.  We find out what all of the characters do, feel, think, and witness.

“Hansel walked ahead of Gretel; after all, he knew he belonged in the front because Gretel was just a girl. Gretel dropped breadcrumbs behind her as she went, knowing that her bumbling brother couldn’t be counted on to find his way home from the outhouse, let alone from the middle of the woods. Ahead of them, an old witch waited, her stomach rumbling at the thought of what a delicious dinner the two plump children would make.”

 Third person pronouns such as he, his, she, it, its, they, and them are used in telling the story.  The narrator tells the story from the vantage point of one character.  The narrator can see into this character’s mind, but not any of the other characters.  We find out only what this character does, knows, thinks, and witnesses.

 “Hansel walked ahead of Gretel. Gretel dropped breadcrumbs behind her as she went, knowing that her bumbling brother couldn’t be counted on to find his way home from the outhouse, let alone from the middle of the woods. ”

 Pick a story or fairytale that you have read. Write the name of the title down.  What POV is the story normally told in?  If you were to change it to a different POV, would it change the way we read the story? Explain  Minimum of 4 complete sentences.  Example:  The story I picked was The Ugly Duckling. It is told in third person limited point of view. If I were to change it to first person point of view it would change the way we read the story because we would know more about what the duckling is thinking about when everything happens. The story itself would stay the same though.
