A ride at the fair consists of seats hanging on lengths of 5m chains on a rim of radius 3m. The total mass of passenger and chair is 60kg. At its fastest rotation the chains are at 35 o to the vertical as shown in the diagram. 1)Calculate the tension force in the chain 2)What is the passenger’s speed? 3)What is the tension force in the chain when the ride is stationary? A cyclist (and cycle) of mass 80kg move around a bend of radius 20m. The tyres can handle a maximum friction force of 250N. Calculate the maximum speed the cyclist can travel around the bend if: (assume g = 9.8ms -2 ) a) the bend is unbanked b) the bend is banked at 25 o Example: Banked curves

Steeper banking gives greater centripetal force. The larger the centripetal force, the faster the maximum speed.
