CISB113 Fundamentals of Information Systems Telecommunications & Network
2
Learning Outcomes At the end of this lesson, you should be able to: Describe the values of telecommunications and networks to business Describe the common elements of telecommunications and network
3
Telecommunications networks now play a vital and pervasive role in business, supporting : E-business E-commerce Enterprise collaboration Other applications that support management and strategic objectives Business Application Trends
4
The Difference … E-Business e-Business refers to the automation of an organization's internal business processes using the Internet and browser technologies.E-Commerce e-Commerce refers to the conduct of commerce or business electronically – Commercial transactions over the Internet only – buying and selling via the Internet.

Values of Telecommunications and Network
6
A computer network consists of two or more computers intended to share resources. In the world of computers, networking is the practice of linking two or more computing devices together for the purpose of sharing data. Networks are built with a mix of computer hardware and computer software. Network
7
The Internet is a global network connecting millions of computers. More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges of data, news and opinions. According to Internet World Stats, as of December 31, 2011 there was an estimated 2,267,233,742 Internet users worldwide. This represents 32.7% of the world's population. Internet Service Providers – A company that specializes in providing easy access to the Internet – For a monthly fee, provides software, user name, password, and Internet access Internet http://www.webopedia.com
8
Most popular Internet applications and uses – E-mail – Instant messaging – Browsing the Web – Newsgroups – Chat rooms – Publish opinions, subject matter, creative work – Buy and sell – Downloading (data, software, reports, pictures, music, videos) Internet Applications
10
Business Value of Internet
11
An intranet is a private network that is contained within an enterprise This is a network that is not available to the world outside of the Intranet. For example, consider an office with a few PCs and a few printers all networked together. The network would not be connected to the outside world. On one of the PCs there would be a directory of web pages that comprise the Intranet. Other PCs on the network could access this Intranet by pointing their browser to this directory Intranet http://www.hcidata.info/inet.htm
12
Many companies have sophisticated and widespread intranets, offering… – Detailed data retrieval – Collaboration – Personalized customer profiles – Links to the Internet Intranets uses Internet technologies – Web browsers and servers – TCP/IP network protocols – HTML publishing and databases Intranet
13
Intranet as Information Portals
14
An Extranet is actually an Intranet that is accessible to authorised outsiders. The actual server (the computer that serves up the web pages) will reside behind a firewall. The firewall helps to control access between the Intranet and Internet permitting access to the Intranet only to people who are suitably authorised. Extranet http://www.hcidata.info/inet.htm
15
Web browser technology makes customer and supplier access to intranets easier and faster Another way to build and strengthen strategic relationships Enables and improves collaboration between a business, customers, and partners Facilitates online, interactive product development and marketing Business Values of Extranet
16
Peer-to-peer Client/Server Wide Area Network Local Area Network Virtual Private Network Types of Communications Network
17
a peer-to-peer (P2P) network is created when two or more PCs are connected and share resources without going through a separate server computer Peer-to-Peer Network
18
A computer network is referred to as client/server if (at least) one of the computers is used to "serve" other computers referred to as "clients". Besides the computers, other types of devices can be part of the network. Client/Server Network
19
A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network that is confined to a relatively small area. It is generally limited to a geographic area such as a lab, school, or building. Local Area Network
20
Telecommunications Network that covers a large geographic area Wide Area Network (WAN)
21
A virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network, such as the Internet. It enables a computer to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if it were directly connected to the private network, while benefitting from the functionality, security and management policies of the private network Virtual Private Network (VPN) Wikipedia.com
