Panel Discussion Examining Issues for Introduction of IPv6 to Home Users Global IPv6 Summit in Japan 2001 December 4 th, 2001
2
List of Panelists From Terminal Manufacturer Side: –Mr. Kosuke Ito (Canon Inc.) –Mr. Atsushi Onoe (Sony Corporation) –Dr. Akiyoshi Tanaka (Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.,Ltd.) –Dr. Kenichi Nagami (Toshiba Corporation) ISP side –Mr.Akihiro Inomata (Fujitsu Limited) –Mr. Toshiyuki Yamazaki (NTT Communications Corporation) Coordinator Mr. Tsukasa Ogino (Internet Research Institute/JPNIC)
3
Current Situation Trial assignment and allocation of IP address Technical experiment of IPv6 protocol stack IPv6 over IPv4 (technical experiment of transition from v4) ★ Trial service starting from ISP and backbone side ★ Extension and Improvement of IPv6 based on IPv4 experiences ★ Explore new applications and markets (Internet Home appliances, etc.)
4
Expectations for IPv6 (1) IP control equipment vendor side: –Expansion of business field for communication market due to increase in IP communication –Expansion of built-in control units market due to increase in the targets of IP connection –Expansion of markets: increase in traffic & sales ISP/Administrators side –Increase in IP end users (Increase in the targets of IP connection and sales) –Succession of routing techniques from IPv4 (the minimum effort of transition)
5
Expectations for IPv6 (2) (Illusion of?) terminal manufacturer side –Plug and play (free from IP configuration) –Anything “always” connected (monitoring the state of devices) Access to a private terminal from global, Passive connection) –Realization of direct IP connection between terminals –Utilization of IP address like terminal ID, and management of each terminal in CRM service –One Stop service in making contract for network connection service of devices Abolition of making contracts for all devices (making users free from ISP contracts for each device) Service charge including IP connection service charge –Simplification of development based on IP (no proprietary protocols necessary)
6
Technical Issues for Popularization of IPv6 1) Ease of Use How should the user interface be arranged, so that non-PC users do not need to deal with set up? 2) Network (the way of allocating addresses) - allocation by ISP - allocation by device manufacturer 3) DNS - Who sets up DNS? - How to have inter-brand compatibility? 4) Security Certification: How to certify that a user is the proper user of the terminal? Support: Service system: relation between carriers, ISPs, manufacturers, and users
7
Discussion What will IPv6 give to Home Users? –Home internet appliances? What will happen to in-house domestic network? –For TV, Air-conditioning, etc. Who will distribute IP addresses? –ISP? –Device Manufacturer -> The serial number = IP address What about the security? –air-conditioning will be controlled from outside
8
Current Internet Service scheme Backbone ISP Service ISP Service ISP Service RIR/NIR address allocation IP Address allocation/assignment Address assignment to users ISP contracts (Auto-assignment of IP address) ISP contract for pay-service payment Direct contract for pay-service
9
Can we continue this scheme? End users have been PC users so far. –Is it necessary for users to make a contract for each device with ISP? It is quite natural that a device manufacturer becomes a service provider. DHCP assignment of address from contracted ISP is common. –A connecting device is PC. Easy to implement a function of IP assignment negotiation –What is the best way to assign addresses to handy IP terminals brought anywhere such as PDA, mobile phone, Digital Camera, etc? Accessing direction from a terminal to global –The strong needs of accessing so far have been from a terminal to Internet. From now on, the needs will be not only accessing from a terminal but also accessing to a terminal.
10
Dreaming? Model of Net-Business for a terminal manufacturer Providing a network service to a terminal (terminal control, service billing, etc.) Let ISP undertake IP connectivity of terminals and guarantee the QoS ISP Service B ISP Service A Home Sta. ISP Service CService D HA CHA D ? Home users
