Literacy across our school Townhill Primary School Mrs Broadley

Reading for Enjoyment Enjoyment and choice I enjoy exploring and playing with the patterns and sounds of language (Nursery - Early Level) I enjoy exploring and choosing stories and other texts to watch, read or listen to, and can share my likes and dislikes. (Primary 1-4 - First Level) I regularly select and read, listen to or watch texts which I enjoy and find interesting, and I can explain why I prefer certain texts and authors. (Primary 5-7 - Second Level)

Whole School Initiatives  National Poetry Day  Tinsel Tales Around The Tree/Robert Burns  World Book Day  Literacy Displays  Roald Dahl Day  TREAT

Creative Classrooms  Scots Box  Literacy Displays/ Book recommendations  Radiowaves - www.radiowaves.co.ukwww.radiowaves.co.uk  Smartboard & active learning

How does it help your child?  International research ( PISA 2000) has shown that “Being enthusiastic about reading and a frequent reader was more of an advantage on its own than having well-educated parents in good jobs”  Research has also shown that keen readers perform better at school than those children who are equally capable but read less.  Everyone needs opportunities to choose books to read for enjoyment- it helps EVERY area of the curriculum.

What can you do?  Invite your child to read with you every day – keep reading time relaxed in a quiet area  Ask about the book – what do you think it will be about ? What kind of book is it?  Prediction – stop and think. What will happen next?  Get involved – what is your favourite character? Why do you like them? Why do you think they behaved like that?  Use the text for clues – finding the meaning of a word.  Talk about the follow up work – it is given for a reason!  Make reading positive – don’t correct too quickly. Allow self- correction time.  Model your own good reading habits!
