Each student will have a reading learning goal based on which stage of ‘The Big 6’ they are currently working through. Eg: My reading goal is rhyming My reading goal is finding interesting words in text

Book introduction Listen to your child read each night Make sure your child knows their learning goal Focus on the learning goal during reading Encourage your child to read fluently when re- reading Encourage your child to use expression

Ask them questions after reading to ensure they are understanding what it is they are reading Have a variety of text types available Encourage your child to sound out the phonograms when they come to a difficult word (wait at least 5 sec before expecting an answer) Continue reading over the holidays (especially Christmas holidays) Data indicates students trend backwards during this time away from school.

Older students can read to a younger sibling or vice versa depending on the age of the older student If you are strapped for time – have students read to you whilst you make dinner, they could help read the recipe Older students can read to themselves for 10 minutes each night – chapter books After reading students can retell the story to an adult Reading may include research for older students – using the internet

Reading groups -Sign the volunteer register -Support for you if required/requested -Help with lower and upper year levels Many parents/guardians assist with younger year levels when the 4-7’s need help as well. Encourage grandparents, friends and anyone else interested.
