Teacher conferencing “I got to chose books that I like. I also think that they are at the right level, because most of it I can get myself, but there are some new words that I have to find out. They make me think about ways of working them out, like sounding and checking sense. I think I can put the new words in my writing.”

“I think I am reading more confident. I read sometimes when I come home and sometimes at bed time. I am reading everyday. I am reading more because I enjoy the books more and I am realising how important it is.”
7
“I would like to go to the bookshop to get more books. Nice fresh books make me want to read them more.”

Real change in YH. Cannot put book down. Have to stop him during class from reading on the sly! Talks about the books he has read. I feel that having new books has helped YH feel that he has something of his own (though he shares with the group), as at home his younger sibling often “ruins his stuff.” He talks about “changing my life” and what steps he is going to take, so that he can be an inventor when he grows up.

"I like the comic (graphic novel), my mum says I shouldn’t read it cos it’s easy, but is not. The lady at the shop said it was scary and she was right. It helped having the lady help us choose. You were right when you said that short stories can be good, because I thought I had to have a fat one to be a good reader.” “I feel more confident at reading now and it has inspired my to write my own book with Mr Bartlett called The Adventures of Stanley – The Mystical Forest. I think my reading helps me also with my writing, as when you read, read, read you see some words you spelt wrong and use it to check to it. I can use words in my writing”

“I liked the bookshops because it has inspired me to read. I got help to chose books I like and they weren’t the ones I might normally pick up” “Book group means that I can talk about the books to the other kids in the group. I would like to go again in year 6. “

“Before I used to read a little bit, maybe more on Saturday, but not in the week. Now I am reading everyday because I want to find out what goes what happens” “Having the ladies at the shop was good because they found books that were suitable for us and what we would like. They got the selections right. “ “Maybe in Y6 we could go again and get some more books. I have spoken to Antonio about their books and we have recommended them to each other. Antonio is reading one that I recommended. I think I book club would be nice, so we could talk about what we are reading. “
