Colonial Governments ► Legislative Assemblies: represented colonists. Became chief law-making body in colonies ► Governors: enforced laws. Usually appointed by King ► Courts: for local justice.

The Colonies were more Representative than Britain ► Available land = more voters! ► Officials were required to live in same district as their constituents ► Americans valued representation!

Growth of Trade ► Britain used colonies for resources ► Trade laws limited colonial economies & favored Britain ► Led to increase in smuggling

Colonial Women ► Contributed to colonial economy thru various jobs ► But laws kept married women from owning property or working outside the home.

The Great Awakening 1730s-1740s ► Widespread evangelical Christian movement. ► Led to a willingness to question traditional church practices ► Stressed spiritual equality & personal salvation

The Enlightenment ► Spurred by Scientific Revolution ► Political philosophers used reason to create good society Hobbes & Locke = social contract & natural rights. Montesquieu = separation of powers. Voltaire = freedom of expression Rousseau = protecting individual rights.

Education ► Education focused on religion, law, & Classical literature ► Elementary schools only common in New England. ► 1636: Harvard founded ► 1701: Yale founded

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) ► Writer, inventor, ambassador, philanthropist. ► Discovered lightening is electricity ► Most famous American of his time
