1 Chapter 3 Building Leadership
Leadership Styles Planks of Leadership

2 Leadership Styles Author Patricia Pitcher “The Drama of Leadership” states there are 3 types of leadership styles. The Technocrat The Artist The Craftsman

3 The Technocrat Strong sense of the bottom line
“My way or the Highway!” Strong sense of the bottom line Loves the sound of their own voice Prioritizes logic over emotion Refuses to compromise “Get the job done!” Example? Herman Boone

4 The Artist Leads by imagination and intuition
Vision of “The Big Picture” Invites others to share ideas and not afraid to show emotion. Sometimes unpredictable Followers may sometimes “go with the flow”

5 The Craftsman Leads by common sense and integrity What is integrity?
Values getting the job done, but will not sacrifice people and their views and values. Not afraid to be creative, but has a sense of the real world. Tony Dungy Video Clip

6 Role Play What Type of leader are you?
Create a short skit that will show the types of leadership styles. I will assign your group a style. Pick a leader. Use everyone in the group. Make it realistic. Simulate a business meeting, principal meeting with AP’s, coach’s meeting w/players, etc.

7 What do you think? What would be the benefit of blending these 3?
3 questions that all workers want answered of their leaders: Can I trust you? Are you committed? Do you care about me?

8 Six Planks of Leadership
A Leader has a sense of vision A Leader is willing to act A Leader makes good decisions A Leader can handle conflict A Leader works to avoid pitfalls A Leader knows how to motivate

9 Plank 1: A Leader has a sense of vision
Vision – The ability to see the unseen “Solve the puzzle” Able to spot a need before anyone else Not just into making predictions What are examples of products that were visionary when they were created? What is the vision of Travis High School?

10 Sense of Vision Leaders with vision ask these questions:
What are the parts? What are our goals? What our are dreams? JFK Audio Clip

11 Be a Part of Something Special
People want to be a part of something extraordinary. They want to be a part of something special. They want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. What do leaders do to make people feel this way?

12 Plank 2: A Leader is Willing To Act
Talk is cheap; true leaders act upon their vision and goals. Have a plan and do it well! What has the leaders of THS done to show they act on their vision? What leader in US History was willing to act? Lou Holtz said, “I never learned anything from talking, I only learn when I ask questions.” Effective leaders must be willing to change when necessary, and avoid the status quo. Lou Holtz video 1 & 2.

13 Plank 3: A Leader Makes Good Decisions
Nothing worse than an indecisive leader. Questions to ask yourself: Do I have the knowledge required? Is this the right progression? Do I know and understand the risks? What, Why, and How? Know The Importance of Teamwork Lou Holtz Video 3

14 Plank 4: A Leader Can Handle Conflict
Problems will always arise. How well you handle situations will determine your personal leadership greatness. What leader do you know that has handled conflict? How? Address the problem Hold accountable Re-focus to the Objective Titans Part 2

15 Plank 5: A Leader Works To Avoid Pitfalls
1. Being afraid to fail 2. Not paying attention to details 3. Forgetting people and the original objectives 4. Not listening to others

16 Plank 6: A Leader Knows How to Motivate
What leader do you know that is an incredible motivator? How? Motivation is simply the result of the people in which you lead to fully trust you enough to follow your advice. What motivates some people may not motivate others. Herb Brooks – USA Hockey

17 Motivation If someone is not motivated, it is because he/she does not have any goals or aspirations. The reason so many people do not aspire for greatness is because they do not how good they can be, or they are afraid of failure, or afraid that they may not reach it.

18 Motivation Your talent determines what you can do.
Your motivation determines how much you are willing to do. Your attitude determines how well you do it!
