The Isolated Society ----Rent Jonathan Larson Angela Wang

Introduction Jonathan Larson Rock musical adaptation of Puccini’s opera --La boheme Most of the roles and plot element are directly used from it.

RENT “The story is about a clique of artists, intellectuals, upwardly mobile con artists, cross-dressers, activists, and slumming trust-fund kids.“ ----Mike, Sell “And about fighting with interpersonal relationships, losing, meaning of life, shelter, and AIDS.”

Homosexual The most impressive part in the play for me is that when we are into it, homosexuality and bisexuality have become exceptionally reasonable and justified. Not only because of the entire drama are full of examples of them, more importantly, compared to the chaos and fragility of relationship between men and women, Colin and Angel’s same-sex love which filled with true forgiveness, kindness and selfless heart arouse the audience’s sympathy for the innocent most.

“Rent is but one example of the unprecedented increase of gay and lesbian imagery in the 1990s, but it also demonstrates the discursive boundaries within which queer identity was.” ---Kevin, Schwandt

We can see that in audience’s eyes, the whole society is on stage; new concept followed the new community. Because there’s really not that more chance to experience this kind of case by our own, it can only be classified to the “special case” inevitably.

But there’s no doubt that whether homosexual or heterosexual, love between Colin and Angel’s mutual support among their sickness moved us most. In this play, I see the pure meaning of love.

Bohemia The spirit of Bohemia chained the entire play. "Bohemian means that you can live and work cheaply, and their behavior jump out of tradition; one community which achieve spiritual freedom.“ ----Wikipedia

It is because of the uninhibited sense, we often associate it with drug addiction, self-trapping of poverty, homosexuality. And Rent is which filled with these elements. The difference between the poor and them is that they still can find their own entertainment in the difficult position at all.

This may be a very enviable life, but also sad, because they most have got AIDS. Some people will give up, but these groups of people will choose another life – they are happy to face and treasure the rest of their lives, making marry while they can, and clearly understanding the things they really want.

Instead of being a special establishment, Bohemia is a spirit condition. There are so many artists are out of Bohemia with unrestrained and innocent content. But in the capitalist era, Bohemia seems to be disappearing, and it seems to become a failed alternative. Conclusion
