1 LEARNING ENGLISH

2 Why do a lot of people in different countries learn English?
Nowadays more and more people learn English because it is used everywhere. It has become the language of international communication. We can say that it is becoming a global language.

3 English language is used in
politics, international relations (politicians, diplomats) trade, business (businessmen) science (scientists) sport (sportsmen) tourism (tourist guides) Internet (computer programmers)

4 Why do you study English?
I learn English because I need it for my future work. I am going to be a translator. I need the knowledge of English for my education because I am going to study abroad.

5 I learn English because I like travelling
I learn English because I like travelling. The knowledge of English will help me to communicate with people in different countries.

6 The English language consists of different areas
Reading Grammar Speaking Writing Listening Vocabulary Pronunciation

7 What kind of learner are you?
What do you prefer? meeting people face to face talking on the phone doing things together (sports, walking, etc.) When you are angry, do you… go very quiet? shout? walk away? How is your memory? Do you… forget names but remember faces? Forget faces but remember names? Remember the things you did with someone? Which of these is true about you? I don’t like talking or listening to people for very long. I enjoy listening but want to talk as soon as possible. I use a lot of gestures when I talk to people. When you have to sit and wait for something, do you … Look around you / watch people? Talk to yourself or other people? Move around /bite your nails?

8 Which ideas can you suggest to help students with different kinds of memory to learn English better?
Students who have visual memory should read books, write down the new words in the vocabulary, watch educational TV programs or videocassettes.

9 Students who have auditory memory should listen to the cassettes, to English radio programs.
Students who have kinaesthetic memory should use different objects to remember the words better or should move when they memorize something.

10 What are the best ways of learning English nowadays?
I think we can buy cassettes and learn English at home. You can repeat after the cassettes and read from a book at the same type. You can improve your pronunciation and learn a lot of useful words and phrases.

11 I think the best way of learning English is going to Great Britain and studying English at a language school. Living with an English family means you have to speak English all the time. And the language classes at school will help to improve your vocabulary, grammar and speaking. But, unfortunately, this way of learning English is very expensive.

12 I think that the best way to learn English is with the help of the Internet. You can log on to an English website and practise your grammar, read articles and even chat with teenagers from the English-speaking countries. It is very convenient and I’m sure that lots of people will be learning like this soon.

13 You have received a letter from your English-speaking friend Sylvia
I have decided to begin learning German. But I don’t know which is the best way to study a foreign language. I remember that you go to a language school. Can you tell me about different ways of learning a foreign language? Which one do you think is the best? By the way, I'm going to a rock concert next week… Write a letter to Sylvia. In your letter - answer her questions - ask 3 questions about the rock concert. Write 100 – 140 words. Remember the rules of letter writing.
