What influences who we are? There are many things we consider to be part of the UK’s lifestyle. But are these things truly British? The next 10 slides all show pictures from different countries. You need to identify each country. © Copyright of Gwent Police © Hawlfraint Heddlu Gwent

Communities and Identities Being part of a community makes you feel that you belong. People usually belong to several different communities, and these help to shape our identity, the way we see ourselves. We are part of a local community – our neighbourhood – and we are also part of larger communities (like a city, a town or a country) where lots of different groups of people live. Sometimes people feel they belong and sometimes they feel that nobody cares about them and that they don’t belong. © Copyright of Gwent Police © Hawlfraint Heddlu Gwent

Belonging to a Community For many, a community is about belonging. Most people feel they belong to communities with whom they have something in common, such as age, language, hobbies, job they do, or the religious beliefs they share. Many people are part of several communities that overlap – e.g., school, friends, family and neighbours, clubs, ethnic group, place of worship. © Copyright of Gwent Police © Hawlfraint Heddlu Gwent

Belonging to a Community Task The diagram shows the communities that Noah belongs to. Draw a diagram to show the different communities you feel you belong to. Are these all with people your own age, or do you share communities with people of different ages? Add this information to your diagram. Discuss your diagram with the group. Are there any overlapping communities within your class? Why do you feel that you belong to these communities? 17 Identities Belonging to different communities is part of what gives people their sense of identity It is different for each person. Some things are more important to them than others. Look at the following influences on cultural identity and decide which ones are important to you. Language Family Food Religion Education Place of birth Where you live Symbols Customs and traditions Clothing Music Interests and hobbies Friends JOBS and sports team © Copyright of Gwent Police © Hawlfraint Heddlu Gwent

Identity Task Think about examples of influences that are important to you. Using magazine pictures and drawings make a collage to show your own identity. Discuss your collage with the rest of the class. How are people different? What influences do people share? How important is your cultural identity to you? © Copyright of Gwent Police © Hawlfraint Heddlu Gwent

Today’s Society From looking at the previous slides we can see that many countries from around the world have an effect on the way we live today. However, not everyone in Britain can see the positive effects on our lives. © Copyright of Gwent Police © Hawlfraint Heddlu Gwent

Living Together in Communities Communities do not always live happily together. Sometimes people judge each other by things like age, ethnic group, religion, wealth and class. They don’t get to know each other, so they don’t trust each other. © Copyright of Gwent Police © Hawlfraint Heddlu Gwent

Let’s look at age. What sort of things do young people say about old age? What sorts of things do old people say about young people? Why do they say these things? Discuss why old and young people hold these sorts of views about each other in this country. © Copyright of Gwent Police © Hawlfraint Heddlu Gwent

Ali’s story “I was out with my friends when these bigger boys came over and said that we should go back to our own country. I said I’d been born here and they said that I was being cheeky and grabbed my arm and threw me to the ground. One of them jumped on my arm and two others tried to kick me! Then they ran away, calling me names as they went. I was really upset because they’d been so nasty to me.” © Copyright of Gwent Police © Hawlfraint Heddlu Gwent

Activity 4d Write a letter to your local newspaper highlighting your opinions on race hate crime. © Copyright of Gwent Police © Hawlfraint Heddlu Gwent

Multicultural Day Task Imagine that your school is holding a multicultural day in order to raise awareness of such racial attacks. In groups design a banner and posters to advertise the day. Your work should emphasise the importance of living together in peace and harmony. People should realise that Britain's society is changing and is now multicultural. © Copyright of Gwent Police © Hawlfraint Heddlu Gwent
