4/21/2017 Lesson # 15 What Does Jesus Mean When He Speaks About ….. “SINS AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT” – Matt. 12:31-32 Part Two “An in depth look at The Holy Spirit” John 1:32 “And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.” The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. A Presentation of the Newton church of Christ, NC USA

3 Sins Against the Holy Spirit
From an Article By Keith Sharp

4 People often ask “Is there a sin God will not forgive?” “Is there a chance I have committed it?” “What is ‘the sin’ against the Holy Ghost?” In the Scriptures there are several sins that are especially noted as offenses against the Holy Spirit. Introduction 4/21/2017

5 Blasphemy – Lesson 14 Tempting Resisting Grieving Quenching Insulting
Introduction 4/21/2017

6 Acts 5:1-9 (NKJV) 3 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? You have not lied to men but to God.” his wife came in, And Peter answered her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?" She said, "Yes, for so much." 9 Then Peter said to her, "How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? . . Tempting 4/21/2017

7 Ananias & Sapphira They lied "to the Holy Spirit" (Acts 5:1-3).
Thus, Simon Peter rebuked Ananias, "You have not lied to men but to God" (Acts 5:4). And later Sapphira, "How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord?" (Acts 5:9 KJV). Tempting 4/21/2017

8 Ananias & Sapphira To “tempt” the Holy Spirit is to test the Holy Spirit – (NKJV) They tested the ability of the Spirit to know the secrets of their hearts and actions – they THOUGHT they could get away with it!! When we sin we tempt or try God by testing his knowledge of our hearts and activities and his will to punish the guilty (Heb 3:7-12). Tempting 4/21/2017

9 Acts 7:51-53 (NKJV) 51 "You stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers, 53 who have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it." Resisting 4/21/2017

10 The Stiff Necked & Uncircumcised In Heart & Ears
Stephen had demonstrated how each successive generation had rebelled against a merciful God, (Acts 7:2-50) Resist - "to set against" signifying "to withstand, oppose, resist," — (Vine's) Resist -“to fall upon, run against” b. “to be adverse, oppose, strive against”: —(Thayer's) Resisting 4/21/2017

11 The Stiff Necked & Uncircumcised In Heart & Ears
The Jewish nation did not merely refuse to hear the prophets; they persecuted them. The council did not simply reject Christ; they murdered Him. This council stopped their ears and violently rushed Stephen stoning him to death (Acts 7:54-60). Resisting 4/21/2017

12 The Stiff Necked & Uncircumcised In Heart & Ears
To "resist the Holy Spirit" is to NOT ONLY to refuse the truth . . . But also to actively oppose the one who proclaims it. We still have folks who are stiff necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears. People still “RESIST” the truth! - (Luke 10:16). Resisting 4/21/2017

13 Ephesians 4:30 (NKJV) 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. put away lying wrath nor give place to the devil steal no longer Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. Vrs Grieving 25 Therefore, putting away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor," for we are members of one another. 26 "Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil. 28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. 29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you. Eph 4: Let no corrupt communication. What is rotten. Anything that will demoralize others. Obscene, licentious, or immoral language is forbidden. All that the Christian speaks should be that which is good to the use of edifying, building the hearers up in Christ. Grieve not the Holy Spirit. Such sins as those described above grieve the Holy Spirit, nor will he continue to dwell those addicted to them. Sealed unto the day of redemption. The sealing of the Holy Spirit is an earnest, a proof, an assurance of the final redemption. See Eph_1:13. If we grieve him away, the seal will be gone. 4/21/2017

14 By Forsaking His Teaching
This word “GRIEVE” means "to make sorrowful; to affect with sadness" (Thayer). Our sin grieves the Godhead – Gen 6:6; Matt. 23:37 Just as godly parents are grieved by their children who sin! – Therefore – put away sin – and grieve not the Holy Spirit! Grieving 25 Therefore, putting away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor," for we are members of one another. 4/21/2017

15 1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 (NKJV) 19 Do not quench the Spirit.
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil. It is the declaration of that which cannot be known by natural means, Matt. 26:68, it is the forth-telling of the will of God, whether with reference to the past, the present, or the future, see Gen. 20:7; Deut. 18:18; Rev. 10:11; Rev. 11:3. … "In such passages as 1 Cor. 12:28; Eph. 2:20, the 'prophets' are placed after the 'Apostles,' since not the prophets of Israel are intended, but the 'gifts' of the ascended Lord, Eph. 4:8, 11; cp. Acts 13:1; …; the purpose of their ministry was to edify, to comfort, and to encourage the believers, 1 Cor. 14:3, while its effect upon unbelievers was to show that the secrets of a man's heart are known to God, to convict of sin, and to constrain to worship, 1 Cor. 14:24, 25. "With the completion of the canon of Scripture prophecy apparently passed away, 1 Cor. 13:8, 9. In his measure the teacher has taken the place of the prophet, cp. the significant change in 2 Pet. 2:1. The difference is that, whereas the message of the prophet was a direct revelation of the mind of God for the occasion, the message of the teacher is gathered from the completed revelation contained in the Scriptures." * [* From Notes on Thessalonians by Hogg and Vine, pp. 196,197.] —Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words 4/21/2017

16 To Despise Teaching Denotes “metaphorically, to suppress, stifle divine influence,” (Thayer). First century Christians quenched the Spirit by discouraging the use of or failing to use spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 12:18-31; 1 Thess. 5:20; 2 Tim 1:16). Quenching 4/21/2017

17 We are guilty of a parallel sin if ….
To Despise Teaching We are guilty of a parallel sin if …. We resort to other things besides the Word to attract & persuade men (Rom. 1:16; Heb. 4:12) We fail to use our abilities and opportunities in the service of Christ - (Matthew 25:14-30). We discourage others from doing so – (Rom. 12:3-8) Quenching 4/21/2017

18 Hebrews 10:28-29 (NKJV) 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? Insulting 4/21/2017

19 Turning Back From The New Covenant
To "insult" is to "act with insolence" (Vine) or "to treat shamefully" (Thayer) Those, having once believed and obeyed His Word, insult Him when they turn back. (2 Pet. 2:20) They will have their reward – (30-39) - “Vengeance, (Heb. 10:30), “perdition” (Heb. 10:39). Quenching Turning Back From The New Covenant Hebrews 10:30-39 (NKJV) 30 For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. And again, "The Lord will judge His people." 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. 32 But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: 33 partly while you were made a spectacle both by reproaches and tribulations, and partly while you became companions of those who were so treated; 34 for you had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven. 35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: 37 "For yet a little while, And He who is coming will come and will not tarry. 38 Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him." 39 But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul. 4/21/2017

20 We insult the Spirit of grace when we:
After having been saved by grace – we revert back to sin – (Rom. 6:1-19; 8:13,14) Having known the truth, reject the truth and revert back to the doctrines and commandments of men. – (Gal. 5:4) Cease to abide in the truth – (John 15:1-10; Rom. 11:20-22) Quenching Turning Back From The New Covenant Hebrews 10:30-39 (NKJV) 30 For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. 4/21/2017
