“Forgiveness” Matthew 18:21-35

I. Why we should forgive We should forgive so as not to give Satan a foothold in our lives. –Unforgiveness gives Satan the opportunity to get a grip on us spiritually. –We grieve the Holy Spirit.

I. Why we should forgive We should forgive because Christ forgave us. –Our relationships ought to be compassionate. –We ought to forgive just as God forgave us through Christ. He forgave us willingly. He forgave us completely. –TETELESTAI means “PAID IN FULL”

I. Why we should forgive We should forgive so we can have freedom from bitterness. –We need to put away damaging attitudes. Bitterness, rage and anger –We need to get rid of damaging behaviors. Brawling and slander, along with all malice.

II. How to forgive. Decide to forgive. –Forgiveness is never based on feeling. –We forgive because it is the right thing to do. Articulate your forgiveness. –Verbalize forgiveness to those who ask for it. –It helps to say the words even if confrontation is neither possible or advisable.

II. How to forgive. Let go of the offense. –We need to resolve the issue and win over a brother or sister in the Lord (Matthew 18). –We ought to forgive as the Lord has forgiven us.

Conclusion Forgiveness is not the same as forgetting. Forgiveness is not the same as trusting. Forgiveness must be granted; it cannot be earned. Trust cannot be granted; it must be earned.
