Rules for Chinese Measure Words What is a measure word? A measure word (liàngcí 量词 ), also known as a classifier or a count word, is used along with numerals to define the quantity of a given object or objects, or with "this"/"that" to identify specific objects. When do I need a measure word (category 1) in a sentence? 1)When a quantity is involved, for instance, if you use a number in front of a noun. 2)When you want to specify a noun, in other words if you use 这 this, 那 that, 每 every. 3)When the question words 哪 which and 几 how many are used. Where should I place a measure word in a sentence? Rule1 :Number + Measure word + Noun 三 只 鸟 three dogs / trois chiens 四 匹 马 four horses / quatre chevaux Rule 2: Determiner + Measure word + Noun 这 只 狗 那 条 鱼
