NOTES NOTES I TOOK IN THE DURATION OF MY PROJECT

Dogs: o CTNND2- Possible gene in dogs that may cause their smartness o Can know and retrieve an object by voice command, i.e. Chaser finding one of his toys o Using inference, can find an object that they have never seen ever before Dogs: o CTNND2- Possible gene in dogs that may cause their smartness o Can know and retrieve an object by voice command, i.e. Chaser finding one of his toys o Using inference, can find an object that they have never seen ever before Birds: o Can identify shape and size as differences o Some can hold a conversation with a person from repetition, i.e. Irene and Alex’s nightly routine o Can live a very long time: Alex: 31 years old Oldest bird: At least 60 years old Birds: o Can identify shape and size as differences o Some can hold a conversation with a person from repetition, i.e. Irene and Alex’s nightly routine o Can live a very long time: Alex: 31 years old Oldest bird: At least 60 years old NOTES

Dolphins: o Can read symbols and understand gestures o Use echolocation to find food and other hidden objects o Will travel in groups to be protected and/or to coordinate movements o Are very vocal with clicks and whistles. This is thought to be a sort of “dolphin code” Dolphins: o Can read symbols and understand gestures o Use echolocation to find food and other hidden objects o Will travel in groups to be protected and/or to coordinate movements o Are very vocal with clicks and whistles. This is thought to be a sort of “dolphin code” o Frontal lobe- The front left region of the brain that allows both human and animal to have the ability to recognize what can happen by doing something, to choose between good and bad actions (or better and best), ignore unacceptable social gestures, and can determine similarities and differences between things or events NOTES/TERMS

o Pheromone- Chemicals that are released by one animal that requires a specific response from another animal in the same species as the first o Evolutionary link- A link between generations or species that occurred during evolution o The “dolphin code”- A collection of clicks and whistles made by dolphins that could be their sort of a language o Evolutionary link- A link between generations or species that occurred during evolution o The “dolphin code”- A collection of clicks and whistles made by dolphins that could be their sort of a language TERMS

TAKING ACTION WHAT WE CAN DO TO HELP THEM

ANIMAL IGNORANCE Many owners ignore the fact that their pets/ animals are smart. Unlike Alex, some pets don’t have loving owners like Irene Pepperberg, and don’t have loving homes. Grants called “Animal Welfare Grants” can help this stop. Animal welfare grants are to make sure that animals get everything they need for a better life. Foundations like the ASPCA and PETCO grant welfare grants.
