Logistics Functional IPT LOG CoP Restructure Mr. Bill Kobren, Program Director, Sustainment Ms. Jill Garcia, Knowledge Project Officer Jun 22, 2005 Defense Acquisition University

1 Balancing: Curriculum modernization Continuous learning Performance support Evolving practices Knowledge sharing / Communities of Practice Value – Added Contributions… Closely Linked to Achieving Senior Leadership Goals Creating an environment where we learn Before, During, and After the training intervention… Creating a Strategic Learning Environment is at the Heart of DAU…

2 Acquisition Community Connection (ACC) Ten Communities of Practice + Other Special Interest AreasTen Communities of Practice + 18 Other Special Interest Areas Data Management Facilities Engineering Mission Support Contracting Systems Engineering DoD Wireless Information Technology Program Management Risk Management Earned Value Management Logistics Management Logistics Management Community of Practice (Log CoP)Logistics Management Community of Practice (Log CoP) Policy & Guidance Capabilities/Requirements Support Strategies Design Interface Sustainment Tools Training Center Log Community Connection https://acc.dau.mil

3 Where YOU can …. Find Great Tools & Templates Access Latest PBL Resources Supportability Best Practices Logistics Lessons Learned Sustainment Issues and Initiatives Get Ahead In YOUR Career Logistics Training & Education Latest OSD Policy and Direction Logistics Conferences/Events Link to Top DoD Web sites Connect With Professionals Share Experiences & Ideas Start and Join Discussions Locate DoD & Industry Experts Logistics Management Community of Practice (Log CoP) https://acc.dau.mil

4 A Remarkable Success Story Expanded Rapidly Since July 2003 Launch Over 325,000 hits in last year alone Most highly visited of 10 CoPs on ACC site –Surpassed next most visited CoP (Contracting) by 95,000 Averaging over 1000 hits per day last three months LOG CoP often comes up in top three of Google search results We’re up to 1273 Knowledge Objects posted Aggressively Incorporating ACC/AKSS Resources into Courses

5 Issues and Concerns In Danger Of Becoming a Victim of Our Own Success –Existing Taxonomy Does Not Support Expanded Scope or Evolving Focus of LOG CoP –Site Becoming Unwieldy & Difficult to Navigate –Not Inherently Obvious Where Specific Information Resides Search Feature Needs Improvement Not as Interactive as Originally Envisioned (i.e. Member Postings, Community Meetings, Discussion Threads, etc) Taxonomy Restructuring Became Increasingly Necessary

6Taxonomy What is a taxonomy? What is a taxonomy? –Greek taxis, arrangement; see taxis + -nomie, method (from Greek - nomi. See -nomy).] –DAU Directive 709 defines taxonomy as “A conceptual, multi-leveled structure of topics used to organize DAU’s digital and human resources” Why should you care? –Vast amount of information now available; more added daily –Workforce needs to easily and quickly find what they’re looking for –More effective and intuitive navigation tools & capability are vital –Productivity impacted if users cannot find (or must recreate) information –Better resource description = better navigation & discovery

7 Biological taxonomy place an organism in one and only one place. Taxonomy- Systematic KingdomPhylumClassOrderFamilyGenusSpecies Animalia Chordata Mammalia Carnivora Canidae Canis C. familiari Linnaeus … Pets Dogs Farm Animals Mammals But most of the time things belong to more than one category.Pragmatic Taxonomy Strategies LLC The business of organized information

8 Action Plan Increase Community Member Participation Conduct Regular Community Meetings Focused on Topics of Interest – Creates a Sense of Community & Networking Opportunities For Members Conduct Pre-scheduled Online Discussions Forums on Topics of Interest – Creates Opportunity for Conversation within the Community Improve Search Engine Functionality Taxonomy Restructure & Functional Improvements Expanded Scope of Materials Improved Navigation and Ease of Access to Materials Multiple Paths to Same Resources Transition Without Disrupting Regular Users’ Bookmarks Closer Integration with Defense Acquisition Guidebook New Alphabetical "Logistics Library" with Direct Access to Materials New Streamlined, Visually Appealing Home Page Subtly Emphasizes Ties Between Logistics & Systems Engineering Increased Emphasis on Acquisition Logistics, PBL & Log Transformation

12 Road Ahead Making an Important Logistics Resource Even Better Brief FIPT – Jun 05 Finalize Lower Tier Taxonomy & Integrate into Broader DAU-wide Functional Taxonomy Review – Jun 05 Migrate Existing Content/ Create New Content (offline) – Jul-Sep 05 Deploy New Site –1 Oct 05
