Getting you thinking 1 List three jobs that are associated with men List three jobs associated with women What do these jobs have in common?

Getting you thinking: task

Talcott Parsons 1951 It was good to have a divide: Separate gender roles were helpful for employment as : Women: suited to ‘expressive roles’- those emphasising caring and emotions Men: Suited to ‘Instrumental roles’ – those emphasising competition, aggression and achievement

Occupation segregation- Hakim 1979 Employment levels have evened out However difference in types of jobs This is when men and women do separate types of work Two labour forces Thus no competition Refer back to your examples

Vertical segregation: Hakim (1979) women occupy lower levels of pay and status in particular jobs Women tend to be concentrated at lower levels in work Glass ceiling effect- can only do so far 58% of professionals and 67% of managers were male (2004) Pay differences exist between men and women Any evidence for this?

Other inequalities Booklet

Reasons for these inequalities West and Zimmerman (1991) Powerful cultural myths Workers do not like working for a female manager Women are financially dependent on men Women will stop work when having children Women cause their children damage so should stay at home…..

Feminists Hold the belief that divisions come from: Men being seen as masculine Women being seen as suborinate and weak Oakley (1974)- women still stuck with the mother- housewife role… However- this is changing Sharpe (1994)- teenage girls views: more career orientated now

However…
