Talcott Parsons 1951 It was good to have a divide: Separate gender roles were helpful for employment as : Women: suited to ‘expressive roles’- those emphasising caring and emotions Men: Suited to ‘Instrumental roles’ – those emphasising competition, aggression and achievement

Occupation segregation- Hakim 1979 Employment levels have evened out However difference in types of jobs This is when men and women do separate types of work Two labour forces Thus no competition Refer back to your examples

Vertical segregation: Hakim (1979) women occupy lower levels of pay and status in particular jobs Women tend to be concentrated at lower levels in work Glass ceiling effect- can only do so far 58% of professionals and 67% of managers were male (2004) Pay differences exist between men and women Any evidence for this?

Feminists Hold the belief that divisions come from: Men being seen as masculine Women being seen as suborinate and weak Oakley (1974)- women still stuck with the mother- housewife role… However- this is changing Sharpe (1994)- teenage girls views: more career orientated now
