4 Main Ideas When George III became King of Great Britain in 1760, he
decided to reassert the powers of the crown. He established settlements in the West Indies, North America and India. This allowed for huge British expansion. The French and Indian War led to colonists’ dissatisfaction because Colonists had to pay higher taxes to pay for the war effort.

The Declaration of Independence was adopted. The British didn’t formally agree to America’s independence until the Treaty of Paris in 1781. To recognize that people have rights that the government must protect. The Bill of Rights: -freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition -right to bear arms -forbids housing soldiers in private homes -forbids unreasonable searches -forbids punishment without due process of law -right to a speedy and public trial -right to a jury trial for civil cases over $20 -forbids cruel and unusual punishment -civil rights are not restricted to those listed -power not given to the nation belongs to the states and the people
