Philip Builds Macedonia’s Power Macedonia is north of Greece and under the leadership of Philip II-he defeats Greece He built a powerful army and cavalry that was unbeatable Philip is assassinated and his son Alexander III (called the Great) takes power

Taught by the famous philosopher Aristotle He is an excellent leader and soldier He crushes a Greek revolt and in 334B.C. he and his army invade Persia The Macedonians defeat King Darius III at the Battles of Granicus and Issus

Alexander Continues Alexander conquers Egypt and then the rest of the Ancient Empire of Persia by 328B.C. The capital of Persia, Persepolis, is burned- signaling the total destruction of the Persian Empire

Alexander Continued Alexander conquers eastward all the way to India Alexander dies after contracting a fever upon his return to Persia His Empire is divided into 3 parts His conquests spread Greek customs and culture throughout the Middle East and Asia-it is called Hellenistic Culture and it is a blend of Greek, Egyptian, and eastern customs
