2 Philip Builds Macedonia’s Power Macedonia is north of Greece and under the leadership of Philip II-he defeats Greece He built a powerful army and cavalry that was unbeatable Philip is assassinated and his son Alexander III (called the Great) takes power

5 Taught by the famous philosopher Aristotle He is an excellent leader and soldier He crushes a Greek revolt and in 334B.C. he and his army invade Persia The Macedonians defeat King Darius III at the Battles of Granicus and Issus

6 Battle of Issus

7 Alexander Continues Alexander conquers Egypt and then the rest of the Ancient Empire of Persia by 328B.C. The capital of Persia, Persepolis, is burned- signaling the total destruction of the Persian Empire

8 Alexander Continued Alexander conquers eastward all the way to India Alexander dies after contracting a fever upon his return to Persia His Empire is divided into 3 parts His conquests spread Greek customs and culture throughout the Middle East and Asia-it is called Hellenistic Culture and it is a blend of Greek, Egyptian, and eastern customs
