After 20 years of working with Community College students, we have learned that.. Careful one-on-one mentoring is THE most important element needed for a student to follow the Road Map to Success 3 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success
4
iGraduate mentoring puts CARE into action. 4 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success
5
iGraduate mentors demonstrate that they care about the student by: Giving lots of encouragement whenever possible Providing mature advice regarding student choices Helping the student to develop a long term plan for success Translating the plan into goals and expectations Holding the student accountable Advocating for the student Connecting the student with additional resources 5 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success
6
These things cannot be adequately accomplished without meetings with students that are… Structured, Regularly scheduled, Consistent, and Frequent 6 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success
7
Your first meeting with your student should set the tone for the meetings to follow. We suggest that you… 7 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success
8
1. Have a “Ascending Lights iGraduate Mutual Responsibility Contract” that outlines what you and iGraduate will do and what the student must do in return for these services. (Refer to the Form, #1 in your workbook) 8 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success (Form Tab 7, #1 in the workbook)
9
2. Determine the student’s career and academic goal. If the student is “undecided” use one of the General Studies majors in the college catalog and on the Road Map. Take advantage of the career assessment tools on the iGraduate web site and the resources offered at the college career center. 9 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success

3. Discuss the important academic and life skills needed to succeed in college and in iGraduate. Refer to the skills listed in the “Ascending Lights iGraduate Student Semester Review”. Review with your student the booklet, How to Get Good Grades in College 10 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success (Form Tab 7, #2 in the workbook)
11
4. Review the “Ascending Lights iGraduate Golden Checklist: Steps to College Success” with the student. Check off the tasks that have been completed and assign “homework” as needed. 11 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success (Form Tab 7, #3 in the workbook)
12
5. Make arrangements to meet again to prepare the student’s Road Map to Success. 12 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success
13
Once the Road Map to Success is completed review with the student the six steps for “Finishing Up”. 13 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success (Resource Tab 6, #3 in the workbook)
14
“Finishing Up” 1.Meet with a college counselor to convert your Road Map to Success Academic Planning Tool into an official Academic Plan and obtain a date and time to register for classes. 2. Browse the Schedule of Classes to select courses that fit with your Road Map to Success (Academic Plan). 14 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success
15
3. Be prepared to pay your fees immediately as many college campuses drop students from classes if fees are not paid on time. If you applied for financial aid, Check the Status of Your FAFSA and BOGFW applications. 15 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success “Finishing Up” continued
16
4. Register for courses online or in person. Obtain a print copy of your Class Schedule. It is important that you register for classes as soon as your registration priority date and time allow! If classes are closed, use your Road Map to Success Academic Planning Tool to select other classes that meet the same requirements. Be sure to check for needed prerequisites. Be sure to enroll in something. Your registration priority will improve with each semester successfully completed. 16 “Finishing Up” continued The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success
17
5. Pay your fees. Print your enrollment fee receipt. If you have already been approved for financial aid, your enrollment fees will be waived. 6. Buy your Student ID Card on campus and your Textbooks online or on campus. Take your enrollment fee receipt. 17 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success “Finishing Up” continued

18 DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF COLLEGE, BE SURE TO remind your students to ARRIVE EARLY TO ALL OF their CLASSES. They MAY BE DROPPED from the class if they ARE LATE! iGraduate Roadmap to Success The iGraduate Mentoring Process

A.Contact the instructor and ask if they might accept crashers for their course, and what the policy is. Find their contact information on the school website by searching the “Directory.” Politeness will work in your favor. Usually you will be required to attend the first 1-2 lectures and sign a waiting list. B.If you do not receive a reply, attend the first day of class anyway. If the instructor does not announce the crashing policy, ask after class is over. C.If the instructor wishes to admit you, he or she will give you an “add code.” Log onto the registration system and enter the Section Number and “add code” to bypass the closed course message. If the instructor does not give you an add code, you will not be able to add the course. 19 “Finishing Up” continued The iGraduate Mentoring Process General Steps to “Crash” a Course iGraduate Roadmap to Success

Once the student starts attending classes, we recommend a minimum of three follow up meetings. (#13 on the “Ascending Lights iGraduate Golden Checklist : Steps to College Success” 1 st Meeting: Between Week 1 and Week 5 Review progress and provide assistance 2 nd Meeting: Between Week 6 and Week 10 Review progress and provide assistance 3 rd Meeting: Between Week 11 and Week 15 Review progress, provide assistance, help with registration for the next semester, and modify the Road Map 20 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success (Form Tab 7, # 3 in the workbook)
21
21 Meeting more frequently is highly recommended The Student Semester Review should take place after grades from the first semester have been posted. The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success
22
STRUCTURING YOUR MEETINGS AND KEEPING TRACK OF STUDENT PROGRESS We recommend that you fill out an “Ascending Lights iGraduate Mentor Meeting Summary” during each session with your student. Retain these summaries and refer to them in subsequent meetings. Track your student’s academic performance class by class during the semester. 22 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success (Form Tab 7, #4 - blank - and #5 - example - in the workbook
23
Helping your student with time management As a general rule, two hours of study time are required for every hour that a student spends in class. This is a major challenge for most community college students. Use the “Ascending Lights iGraduate Class and Activity Schedule” to assist your student in allocating proper study time (Form, #5 and #6 in the workbook) 23 The iGraduate Mentoring Process iGraduate Roadmap to Success (Form Tab 7, #6 - blank - and #7 - example - in the workbook)
