Math 5 Volume of Right Rectangular Prism Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner
2
In this lesson we will learn how to calculate the volume of a right rectangular prism.
3
Math Warm-up 1.12 x (35 + 65) 2.(12 x 35) + (12 x 65)
4
Math Warm-up - ANSWERS 1.12 x (35 + 65)= 1200 2.(12 x 35) + (12 x 65) = 1200
5
In this lesson we will answer the question: How do you calculate the volume of a right rectangular prism?
6
Vocabulary Review geometric solid- a figure that has three dimensions and takes up space polyhedron – another name for a 3-D figure, which means ‘many faces’
7
Vocabulary Review volume- the number of cubic units needed to fill a solid figure (measured as u 3 ) cubic unit – the volume of a cube that measures 1 unit on each edge
8
Vocabulary Review rectangular prism- A solid (3- dimensional) object which has six faces that are rectangles prism – solid with two congruent parallel bases and faces that are parallelograms
9
Vocabulary Review rectangular prism- A solid (3- dimensional) object which has six faces that are rectangles depth – extent downward or backward or inward; "the depth of the water"; "depth of a shelf"; "depth of a closet"
10
Connecting to Previous Learning In the last lesson, you worked with cubic units to pack a 3-D figure and measure its volume. In this lesson, you will work on a formula to help you calculate the volume of a right rectangular prism.
11
Let’s look at some review examples for finding the volume of a solid. http://www.mathvillage.info/node/ 111
12
A box measures 10 cm. long x 2 cm. wide x 4 cm. high. Its volume is the amount of space inside. By finding the product of the length, width, and height, you will find the number of 1cm cubes that will fit in the box.
13
Guided Practice We will work through a few problems together on this website. http://tinyurl.com/bsjr2vy
14
Working Online Get your notebook and pencil ready. Make sure you have the Lesson # and date on your page.
15
In your Math Notebook Independent Practice http://www.mathsisfun.com /cuboid.html Let’s look at this website together to review volume, then you will work on a few problems on your own. Once you have finished each problem, we will check them together.
16
Lesson Review Finding the volume of a rectangular prism can be calculated using the following equation: Length x Width x Height Volume is measured in cubic units.
17
Quick Check In your Math Notebook 1.How do you calculate the volume of a prism? 2. If you know the volume of a prism, and you know the width and depth, how can you determine the height?
18
Quick Check In your Math Notebook Find the Volume of the rectangular prisms.

Quick Check In your Math Notebook Find the Volume of the rectangular prisms.
20
Quick Check - ANSWERS In your Math Notebook 1.Length x Width x Height 2.Divide the volume of the prism by the product of the width and depth.
21
Quick Check - ANSWER In your Math Notebook Find the Volume of the rectangular prisms. 6in x 6in x 3in = 108 in 3
22
Quick Check - ANSWER In your Math Notebook Find the Volume of the rectangular prisms. 2ft x 3ft x 6ft = 36 ft 3
