Every Occupation Requires Preparation Preparation for a job will depend on the job and its duties Some jobs will require only high school preparation Receptionist, Bank Teller One or two years of college courses Dental Hygienist, Nursing Assistant 4 or more years to prepare Engineer, Teacher, Attorney, Doctor, Accountant

Postsecondary Education Study after high school Receive a certificate or degree Shows employers that you have the skills you need Benefits include: Better thinking skills Able to do a wider variety of tasks on the job Get a promotion faster Receive higher pay Enjoy your job more

Types of Postsecondary Schools Career College/ Technical School Private postsecondary school Offers training for service occupations Most take less than a year to complete This is a “fast” option to starting a career Examples are Cordon Bleu (career college), Devry (Technical School), Art InstituteArt Institute

Types of Postsecondary Schools Community College Public postsecondary school Offers two-year program in many subjects Associates Degree Certificates Sometimes called junior college Phoenix College, South Mt. Community College Phoenix College This is usually least expensive

Types of On-the-Job Training Short, medium, long-term on-the-job-training Crossing guard (Short) Ambulance driver (Medium) Police Officer (Long) Apprenticeships Internships Military training

Apprenticeship Gain training and work experience while working for and with an expert worker Can last two or more years Apprenticeship examples: Plumbing Carpentry Painting Sheet metal

Internship Short term job or work project Usually lasts a few months Usually for college students or recent graduates May not receive pay Develops job skills Internship examples: Professional fields (doctor, lawyer, teacher), management, finance, and marketing

Military Training U.S. armed services offer excellent training Five branches of armed services Army Navy Marines Air Force Coast Guard

Distance Education The teacher and the student are not together in the classroom Learn on your own Send assignments and tests to your teacher Learn by reading, listening to recordings, or watching videos Often takes place on the Internet
