Window Treatments Applications added to window units for helping control the home environment or for purely decorative purposes Two main functions of window treatments: – Control of the environment – Decorative purposes

Control of the Environment Sunlight: important for south and west facing windows Noise: especially needed in sleeping areas Ventilation: ability to allow air movement, beneficial in warm climates Privacy: prevents others from seeing inside Insulation: keeps air from circulating, adds warmth, beneficial in cold climates

Decorative Purposes Create a feeling or mood – Formal or informal – Style of the space Enhance appearance of room – Focal point – Hide out-of-proportion windows – Create an illusion (higher ceilings, wider windows, etc.)

Other Important Considerations Cost – Initial Custom or made-to-measure: most expensive Ready-made: less expensive because it is mass produced - Maintenance Depends largely on fabric selection Consider: – Colorfastness: prevent fading – Type of cleaning: Machine washable Dry clean Dusting or vacuuming

Other Important Considerations Energy Efficiency – Select treatments that will enhance energy efficiency Lightweight fabrics: increase airflow Heavy or insulated fabrics: add warmth Sheer fabrics: allow light in Opaque (solid) fabrics: keep light out
