1 Today’s Agenda… Bellringer: What is an atom? Review
Notes on Elements and Compounds Assignment: Frayer Model for Compound

2 Review What is an atom? What are atoms made up of?
Where are the protons, neutrons, and electrons located in the atom? What kind of electrical charge do protons, neutrons, and electrons have? What is the law of conservation of mass? How is it related to atoms?

3 Elements & Compounds Study Pack #9

4 Today’s Target… I can describe compounds.

5 What is an element? An element is matter made up of only one kind of atom All matter is made up of elements Examples: oxygen and nitrogen are in the air we breath & metals like aluminum are used to make many products we use everyday like soda cans

6 The Periodic Table A chart that organizes and displays all the elements Elements are represented on the table with symbols One capital letter OR one capital and one lowercase letter Example: O: Oxygen & Al: Aluminum What other information can be seen on the periodic table? Atomic number Atomic mass Metal, nonmetal, metalloid Solid, liquid, gas

7 What are compounds? Made up of more than one kind of atom
Made up of more than one kind of element Example: Water H20 Made up of the elements hydrogen and oxygen

8 What are compounds? When the atoms (elements) that make up a compound come together a chemical change occurs This means the elements cannot be separated from each other very easily

9 What are compounds? Compounds are represented by formulas which include letters and sometimes numbers These formulas tell us…. What elements are in the compound How many atoms of each element Let’s try it! What is NaCl made up of? What is CO2 made up of?

10 Review What is an element? What is a compound? How are they different?

11 Assignment Finish the Frayer Model for “Compound” Definition
