Homework: Read pgs. 14-15 from Textbook, define bold terms and sentence on vocabulary sheet. (Sign Language will present today) Do Now: ◦ Agenda- Write Homework ◦ Update T.O.C. Pg. 29 Unit Title pg. Chemical Reactions/Bonding- Pg. 30 Log of Scientific Terms ◦ Groups who haven’t presented- get Banner and get ready to present.
2
Unit Title: Chemical Reactions/ Bonding Chapter’s included: End of 2 (Section 3 & 4) and Chapter 1 Write the EQ’s- Essential Questions: ◦ What happens to atoms during a chemical reaction? ◦ What is a molecule? ◦ How does a reaction happen? ◦ Does mass change when a chemical reaction occurs?
3
Homework: Read pgs. 20-21 in the textbook and define the bold terms and write the bold sentence in Log of Scientific terms. Do Now: Agenda- Write homework Open binder to pg. 30 (Log of Scientific Terms) Complete Element of the day (You have 5 minutes)

Matter- Chemistry - Element-

Observe your pencil point- What are some physical characteristics of Carbon as graphite? Why so smooth? (Discuss responses with your partner) ◦ Shade in a section of paper, fold it in half and rub together- ◦ Rub a blank(non- shaded) folded paper in half… ◦ What do notice- What is the difference?

7
Read page 2 of Carbon hand out- Write on Carbon Hand out Why did the ash covered sugar not burn? Why was the pencil shaded paper smoother than the non-shaded?

Homework: Research the structure of a molecule- (Any ) Draw and label the molecule (with the name of the molecule and the elements in the molecule) on pg. 31 of your binder. Do Now: ****Agenda- Write H.W**** Update T.O.C- pg. 31- Creating Molecules/ Molecule H.W Open binder to pg. 30- Log of Scientific Terms Discuss the difference between an atom and molecule with your partner.- On pg. 31 list any molecules that you know.
10
Atom: ◦ The smallest particle of an element Molecule: ◦ A particle made up of two or more atoms bonded together Chemical Bond: ◦ The force that holds atoms together -the “glue” that makes the atoms “stick” to each other
11
Chemical Formula- ? A combination of symbols that represent the numbers in a compound Subscript- ? ◦ The (small) number in a chemical formula that tells the number of atoms in a molecule or the ratio of elements in a compound Ex: H 2 0

13
Partner up with another group or work with your partner and use your gum drop atoms to create a molecule. Your gum drops now represent elements… Which ones? You decide! Make each color a different element. Try to create a Water molecule first, draw what you see, label what each is then write the molecular structure. Next try the ones on the data table or try to make your own. You may use your periodic table for help.

Homework: Finish class work- Complete Flow Chart Do Now: ◦ Agenda- Homework ◦ Update T.O.C: Pg. 32- Ionic and Covalent Bonding ◦ Pg. 33- How Sodium bonds with Chlorine ◦ Open Binder to pg. 31- Share your molecule w/your partner

When Finished notes sheets- Work on Flow Chart When completed get Lab notebook out of bin Glue in lab sheets for tomorrows lab
