Stock Nomenclature Unit 7 Chapter 7

Naming Ionic Compounds There are a few different ways to name chemicals. Stock Nomenclature is used when a metal or polyatomic cation Is bonded to a nonmetal or polyatomic anion. (Nomenclature means a method of naming something.)

Rules for Stock Nomenclature Always name the cation first. If the charge of the cation is always the same, Use the name directly from the periodic table or polyatomic ion chart: Groups 1 & 2, Aluminum, Zinc, Silver and all Polyatomic ions.

Undecided Metals  If the cation can have more than one charge,  Use the name of the element from the periodic table  With a roman numeral in parenthesis to specify the charge of the cation.  Example:  MnCl 3  Mn +3 = Manganese(III)  MnCl 6  Mn +6 = Manganese(VI)

Roman Numeral Review 1) I 2) II 3) III 4) IV 5) V 6) VI 7) VII 8) VIII 9) IX 10) X

Stock Naming for Anions Always name the anion last. If the anion is a single element: Drop the final syllable(s) and Add the “-ide” suffix. If the anion is a polyatomic ion Use the name of the polyatomic ion.
