M. Bardeen, Homestake Feb. 2006 A Typical Year at Fermilab In FY05 25,000 K-12 students and over 2,400 teachers participated in 32 programs. The education server received 17,270,480 hits. The staff was 15.1 FTEs including 4 FTEs for QuarkNet, and 21 docents (~3 FTE equivalent). ~50 educators taught in the programs and 247 scientists, engineers and technicians volunteered.

M. Bardeen, Homestake Feb. 2006 3 Things to Remember Use DUSEL research as the foundation for programs. Get students and teachers engaged in doing science. Create partnerships between teachers and scientists.

M. Bardeen, Homestake Feb. 2006 Other Things to Remember It takes real commitment, real effort, real money. DUSEL has people, multidisciplinary research & data. Take advantage of lab-based & experiment-based programs. Use the Internet to reach national audiences. Figure out the scale of activities that works for DUSEL. Maintain support from the top. Find "volunteers" among the scientific & technical staff. Make it possible for "users" to participate in E&O. Develop an appropriate niche for the lab. Know & use best practices (and what NSF favors). Collaborate with others. Meet needs identified by the K-12 community.
