At the end of this module you will have an understanding for… learning in the context of new media. the popularity and the importance of mobile learning. mobile learning in general. important elements to use mobile learning. advantages of mobile learning. mobile learning approaches. conditions / hints for m-learning settings. further chances of m-learning. research projects concerning mobile learning on a European and a national level. 2 Module 1 – mobile learning
3
There is an increasing availability of new media/mobile technology, e.g. Smartphones, Tablet PCs etc. In the field of modern didactics mobile learning (m- learning) represents a crucial feature. M-learning attracts an increasing attention in the learning market and in the field of vocational education in enterprises. (See Beutner / Pechuel 2012) 3 Learning in the context of new media Characteristics of new media Interactive / communicative Computer-based Multi-functionalHyper-structured
4
With the increasing popularity of mobile devices it is important that… adequate learning and educational approaches will be developed. benefits of technical devices will be used effectively for a better learning. information in contexts could be interpreted. the needs of specific motivational aspects will be fostered. the requirements of the target group (the learner) will be focused. 4 Why mobile learning?
5
5 What is mobile learning? There are a lot of definitions, which mostly focus on learning possibilities. Mobile learning could be defined as the following:
6
6 Elements for using mobile learning (1) mobile learning Efficiency Context sensitivity Interactivity Personal connection Double availability Online connectivity (See Beutner / Pechuel 2012)
7
Efficiency Possibilty to use learning arrangements independent of time and place and in relation to different situations. Context sensitivity Possibility to use mobile services or information in relation to a specific situation or environment. This could be realised through audio recording, photo, video and/or GPS function of the mobile device. 7 Elements for using mobile learning (2) (See Beutner / Pechuel 2012)
8
Interactivity Possibility to connect to learners for cooperation and collaboration purposes. Personal connection Possibility to learn in a private environment and with personal settings. 8 Elements for using mobile learning (3) (See Beutner / Pechuel 2012)
9
Double availability Possibility to use the same content on mobile devies and on a stationary computer. Online connectivity Possibility to connect in specific situations, to get a feedback or to collaborate or cooperate with other learners with the WIFI. 9 Elements for using mobile learning (4) (See Beutner / Pechuel 2012)
10
Advantages of mobile learning? Free time could be used for learning purposes Get and to spread out knowledge in a quick way Independent of place and time Get information in a quick way Low learning costs Flexible Individual learning breaks Individualised learning environments 10 (See Beutner / Pechuel 2012)
11
Different learning approaches could be motivated and combined with the help of m-learning 11 Mobile learning approaches Learning approaches Action based learning (action learning within a team and with different roles) Action based learning (action learning within a team and with different roles) Visualised and problem orientated learning (POL of the 7 steps of Kees van Meer) Process orientated instructional design - Information- and science-based learning (Constructivistic learning - see Mandl) Problem solved learning (Cognitivistic learning - see Robert Gagné and advanced organizer - see David Ausubel)
12
12 Further chances of mobile learning making use of company’s online resources attracting new generations saving money „Usability and aims good way of putting information (handbooks, presentations) in the hands of employees use of smartphones as a quick way of distributing information essential for keeping mobile employees connected good for preparing learners for seminars and for providing material after seminars making information available that’s up to date could replace the mandatory seminars employees can take device home and have learning content available Organization good for learning about company’s products individualized content for learners good for learning languages lets users provide feedback using simulations to make understanding easier“ Learning (See Beutner / Pechuel 2012)

Example on a national level – Germany NetEnquiry - Entwicklung, Erprobung und Evaluation neuartiger mobiler Lernangebote in der betrieblichen Aus- und Weiterbildung NetEnquiry is a project, which focuses on new e-learning/m-learning approaches in the world of banking and finance. The NetEnquiry consortium creates a tool, which could be used in other industries and branches as well. NetEnquiry offers a mobile learning environment, which focuses on authentic situations in the world of work and provides the learners with tasks, which occur in reality, too. Aims of the NetEnquiry project are the design, development, testing and evaluation of an m-learning tool, that is designed in a web-based form of learning for vocational education and training (VET) in the sense of a simulated practice application. (see http://netenquiry.eduproject.eu/en/) The project is funded with the help of the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) – (01 PF 10008) http://netenquiry.eduproject.eu/en/ 13 Research projects - mobile learning
14
Example on a European level SEEL - Sound in European E-Learning „The project consortium intends to research and develop ways of taking advantage of sound to enhance learning in m-learning / e-learning settings. The consortium will create sample implementations such as instructional videos, audio lessons, interactive online lessons, exercises, and serious games, test them in different learning settings, and turn them into model implementations through the required redesign phases. Special attention will be paid to visually impaired learners for whom acoustic perception is even more important than for other learners. „ (http://seel.eduproject.eu) The project is funded with the help of the European commission under the Erasmus+ programme (2014-1-DE02-KA200-001631) http://seel.eduproject.eu 14 Research projects - mobile learning
