In Kansas, on average 870 special education professionals leave special education each year. Kansas districts lose between 4 and 25% of their special education staff each year. This revolving door of teachers leaves students behind.

Online Application Mentors selected based on projected need and qualifications 42 veteran Kansas special education teachers trained They represent 27 districts and 2 educational service centers Summer Institutes 3 week asynchronous PD for new, experienced and advanced mentors Must meet criteria to be selected Asynchronous Forums Ongoing professional development throughout the year Highly monitored for quality assurance

Additional Components for Kansas New Special Education Teacher Symposiums iPad and Swivl Technology February 2013 July 2013 April 2014 September 2014 Provided to Kansas mentees and their mentors to complete the observation requirement of eMSS. Topics based on survey of special education directors, mentees and mentors. Kansas required 3 observations during year 2. Observations are not evaluative in nature.

Feedback from mentors -Mentor “I love the video observation tool and think it is an excellent must use tool in this process.” -Mentor “The mini iPad has been very beneficial in the program being productive. Last year it was much harder to get to know the mentees and really know how they were teaching. Being able to FaceTime with them and see lessons with the video observations has a made a huge difference.”
