2 The journey back home An idiom is a language feature with a figurative meaning far from that of its real one. They are quite common in everyday English. Example: There is something fishy about it. ( A strange or suspicious situation ) ‘Idioms’

3 The journey back home Take off is a phrasal verb that is a part of a large group of verbs called "multi- word verbs“ Multi-word verbs, including phrasal verbs, are very common, especially in spoken English. The particle can change the meaning of the verb completely. A multi-word verb is a verb like "pick up", "turn on" or "get on with“, etc…etc… These verbs consist of a basic verb + another word or words. The other word(s) can be prepositions and/or adverbs. ‘Phrasal verbs’

4 The journey back home A conjunction is a word that "joins". A conjunction joins two parts of a sentence. There are two main types of conjunctions: Coordinating Subordinating ‘Conjunctions (I)’

5 The journey back home Function: Coordinating conjunctions join two parts of a sentence that are grammatically equal: single words or clauses, for example: - Jack and Jill went up the hill. - The water was warm, but I didn't go swimming. Subordinating conjunctions join a subordinate dependent clause to a main clause, for example: -I went swimming although it was cold. Position: Coordinating conjunctions are always placed between the words or clauses that they join. Subordinating conjunctions are usually placed at the beginning of the subordinate clause. ‘Conjunctions (I)’
