BUILDING STRONG ® History of Federal Involvement in Kansas City Flood Risk Management Initial 1940’s system construction incorporated some existing local works. Post-1951 Kansas River Flood: Repairs and additional authorizations for system improvement and upstream lakes in the Kansas River basin. Project phasing/modifications spread levee construction over several decades ending in late 1970s. Major flooding in 1903, 1908, and 1935, smaller events thru 1920’s Flood Control Act of 1936: Established Flood Control as an authorized Federal purpose of the Missouri River. Authorized Kansas City system. Flood Control Act of1944: “Pick- Sloan Plan” for upper Missouri Basin reservoirs and lower basin levee systems. Expanded Kansas City system. Missouri/Kansas River Confluence

BUILDING STRONG ® Kansas City System Description System Features: 46 miles earth levee; 6 miles of floodwall 60 pump stations Stoplog closures Relief wells 4 Benefits Provided: 32 sq mi; $22B investment 5,000 structures ~20,000 residents; ~90,000 jobs Critical Facilities: Rail & road systems of regional and national importance Significant industrial and utility facilities for the metropolitan region.

BUILDING STRONG ® Project Status Construction Complete ► North Kansas City Unit - Harlem and National Starch relief well installations Construction Underway ► Fairfax-Jersey Creek Unit - BPU floodwall and Jersey Creek sheet pile wall modifications. ► East Bottoms Unit – relief well installations Future Construction ► Argentine Unit design phase not yet started. ► Armourdale and CID Unit modifications pending authorization.
