BUILDING STRONG ® History of Federal Involvement in Kansas City Flood Risk Management  Initial 1940’s system construction incorporated some existing local works.  Post-1951 Kansas River Flood: Repairs and additional authorizations for system improvement and upstream lakes in the Kansas River basin.  Project phasing/modifications spread levee construction over several decades ending in late 1970s.   Major flooding in 1903, 1908, and 1935, smaller events thru 1920’s   Flood Control Act of 1936: Established Flood Control as an authorized Federal purpose of the Missouri River. Authorized Kansas City system.   Flood Control Act of1944: “Pick- Sloan Plan” for upper Missouri Basin reservoirs and lower basin levee systems. Expanded Kansas City system. Missouri/Kansas River Confluence

BUILDING STRONG ® Kansas City System Description System Features:  46 miles earth levee; 6 miles of floodwall  60 pump stations  Stoplog closures  Relief wells 4 Benefits Provided:   32 sq mi; $22B investment   5,000 structures   ~20,000 residents; ~90,000 jobs   Critical Facilities:   Rail & road systems of regional and national importance   Significant industrial and utility facilities for the metropolitan region.
