What are they?? Phrasal verbs consist of a verb plus a particle (preposition, adverb). The particle can change the meaning of the verb completely

Examples look up – consult a reference book (look a word up in a dictionary) look for – seek (look for her ring) look forward – anticipate with pleasure (look forward to meeting someone)

Why do we use them?? Phrasal verbs are mainly used in spoken English and informal texts. (The more formal a conversation or text, the less phrasal verbs are found.)

Very Important! There are no rules that might explain how phrasal verbs are formed correctly - all you can do is look them up in a good dictionary and study their meanings. *You can use the following list:

Fill with To make full with something specific Strike against To come in contact with something Strike up To initiate something / to start to play music or sing. Strike out To fail achieving a goal Flow down To circulate from a high point/ hill. Flow across To circulate from one place to the other Flow along To circulate in the edge/shore Flow into To go into something (ideas, liquids) Flow from To be a natural result of something Cover with Put something on top of or in front of (something) to protect or hide it Cover up To hide something Form out of To give a shape to a thing from another Form into To transform one thing into another Travel towards To move in a specific direction Travel round (around) To move along the outer border of a place Travel through To move crossing the middle of a place
